Currently, we have 1 IP and the service is 608/128. Apt-mate wants her own IP addy so she can play games. She claims that w/2 IP's both will run at 608/128 instead of shared bandwidth. Who's right?

Second phone line, with its own DSL connection, would not share your bandwidth.

If you're just adding another IP to an existing connection then you are sharing bandwidth.

I'm totally confused. If you are running DSL, you can only have one ip from the DSLAM unless your ISP has some REALLY weird setup. Every DSL provider I've seen only runs one ip since it's Point-to-point protocol for these connections. If you get a second IP, you'll need a second line run. Therefore, you'll have double the bandwidth, but not on any one given machine......

The DSLAM doesn't care about IPs. It's configured as a layer 1/layer2 device (most of the time). Even it it isn't, and it's doing layer 3 stuff (network layger) you could still probably assign either a secondary IP or a range of IP's to an interface and create sub-interfaces under that one. Very easy, do it all the time.

Don't confuse data link layer stuff (P-t-P) with network layer stuff. :) It's point-to-point, but it's probaby a single pvc pointed to an interface on a router.

Don't have a clue of what Damaged said but he must be right since I have a range of IPs 5+Gateway+2(whatever they're for).

Damaged is right.

I have 3 IP's, one line. 768 SDSL.

When 2 of my comps were playing C-Strike at the same time, didn't really notice much of a difference. Still got great pings and gameplay was very smooth.

i would think it would be the modem... atleast its like that with cable... if the cable company changes somtething and than no one resets there modem they still use the old settings but you have to restart your cable modme for the speed changes to take effect.... so i think it may be like that with dsl.. if its not on the modem its on the other side.. because i know dsl uploads can go faster than teh alloted 128k....

Good point Akash, but with ADSL you will only "train up" to 128 upload. So it is provisioned on the DSL circuit and not by the IP. In essence, both IP's in ThurzNite's case will be CAPABLE of 608/128, just not at the same time!

I believe this thread is getting beat into the ground, eh?

nope she's wrong

you'll be sharing that bandwidth with the 2 computers.
the only difference is that you won't have to use a router or sygate or similar software to give access to the 2nd computer using the same IP as the first.

Sounds good people.
1 more question. Assume we stay w/1 IP, running ICS off of her computer (2 nics). Can we both play in the exact same game online (such as deathmatch)? I'm pretty sure it won't be a problem if we're playing through diff servers, but what about same server, same game?
Will ICS be able to resolve 2 computers off of 1 IP?

I don't know exactly about ICS, but why would you want to do something like that anyway since you have 2 IPs.

Just get a hub or a switch and then you don't have to deal with any software solutions.

You can get a Linksys 5-port switch for around $30 from staples.

Details Here

I say $30 cause, unless there is a new rebate, the old $20 expired.
Since you both have a different IP, you should have no problems playing on any external servers at the same time.

And you will both be sharing the bandwith. But like I said before, you shouldn't notcice anything different than if you were playing alone.

I had no problem doing that with my ICS setup.
Only problem is that you're pings will be slightly higher, worse if she has crappy nics :(

Whoops...unclear on my part. What I meant was, staying w/the current 1 IP situation, would both computers be able to play in the same game?

eh...I'll ask. I know 1 of my roommate runs StarCraft. The other one...I'm not sure. Check back tonight and I'll post.

I might be wrong (cause I don't play on-line games), but I don't think you can access the same server through 1 IP(ICS) for the same game. It is because the game you play must use/occupy certain (range of) ports. like ftp, use port 21, telnet use port 23... If the games you play use a range of ports and can auto configure the port it use, you might be able to do that.

Depends on the game. UT will allow two machines fromt eh same ip on the same server. I use a Linksys router using NAT and both the wife and I can play onlin in the same server. Other games that require port ranges you are out of luck.
