it happens to us all ;)

why do you only ever need to have one computer hooked up?

the cheapest thing to do is just manually switch the cord to the computer you need when you need it.

although, a cheaper router can be picked up for like 30 or so dollars that would allow both to be on all the time.

Use one computer for business and one for gaming. Unnecessary, I know but I have them and it works for me. Had them networked but why run both 8 hours a day or more??

Cheap router sounds good. What about the linksys switch or usb hub I already have?? Is there an advantage to a router?? Dont mind spending the 30 or so. As I said I know little in this area.

Manually swithching the cable may just due to start and then add the router or whatever.

Thanks

not sure if this will work-- worht a try though, hook the DSL modem up to the swtich, then both the comptuers up to the switch. THen enable internet connection sharing on one of the computers--

not sure if this will actually work or not, as i've never tried it-- but it sounds like it should.

Hee Hee, now you sound like me. Have several scenarios in mind all of which "Should work" but who knows the little kinks that stop most of them.

My methodolgy is always to get one working and then proceed from there. May work well in this case.

Still dont see why I cant hook one up via NIC and the other via USB since both are present on the modem. Sounds like it should work if you condition each computer for the connection.

Get a router, make sure it supports ppop if that is what your dsl uses, it is the easiest and most practical way and then you just plug that into your hub/switch and your all set. I don't think the usb and nic solution will work, because your isp usually binds your account to your mac address.

the problem with hooking one up via cat5 and the other via USB is that the DSL modem istn that smart-- and would want to give each computer a seperate IP adress. And in most cases-- youre dsl provider only gives you on IP unless you pay for extras. So you'd end up with only computer actually working-- might actually complicate thigns enough so that niether would work.

The nice thing about havign a router is that it takes care of all that for you so that you can have multiple computers on at once without worrying about needing multiple IPs.

Makes sense. Static IP was one of the things that worried me. Think Id be OK just swapping the cable for now?

Router looking better and better.

yeah, swapping the cables should be okay--- that what we did with our DSL here at our house until we got our wireless router setup and working.
