DSL Firewall Problems

I have Telocity DSL and my one major complaint is the firewall.

Its not hardware or I'de remove it, it's not software or I'de uninstall it.
THe firewall is located AT the ISP and is built into the service I get.

One of my friends is pretty sure that there is some sort of free software I can use that lets me get around the firewall.
The firewall doesn't allowed me to play certain games, use mIRC, or to download from friends using AIM transfer.
