DSL disconnections- looking for a way to diagnose

Recently my DSL connection has been failing 3-4 times a night. I suspect my ISP is at fault (or perhaps my phone lines). Does anyone know a program that will run a diagnosis to the point of failure when it happens next?

Head over to DSLReports and try a few of their tests. You might have to pay for some of them, so I imagine they would supply more details. If you click on each test, there is a little summary of what each test is about. Find the one that suits you most. Hope this helps. Good luck.

The first thing you want to determine is whether it is a Layer 3 or Layer 1/Layer2 problem. Hopefully your DSL modem has a sort of "link light" or other diagnostic light on it to help you determine if you are losing sync to the DSLAM.

If you are having layer 3 problems, you would have a solid link light on the modem, but not be able to pass traffic (ie. no web browsing, etc). This indicates a problem with your ISP, but this is the less likely of the 2.

The more likely problem you are having is that you are losing sync which indicates a physical line problem 99% of the time (as opposed to having a modem or line card problem). In this case, you need to document the outtages and give your ISP this information. Assuming they are fairly good with these problems, they should run a line test to try to determine what the problem is.

On the same subject,

I am looking for a program that reports and logs, which program initiated the dial-up disconnect.
Why you may ask, well after my ISP assured me that they are not cutting-off inactive connections, I am left to seek what program on my pc initiates a disconnect after a long while.

BTW connection keeper solved the problem.

Happy holidays,
