DSL connect problem: Can ping but cannot browse

Can anyone help me with this one?

I have a Verizon DSL connection and every couple of hours, it just stops web access. In other words, it's just stuck at "waiting for reply" from any site I go to. I can ping the site I am accessing from the command prompt as well as any other site. After a couple of hours, it starts working again.

I googled the problem and no recommended fix works. Any ideas?
