I wanted to check to see how far the CO was from my house. I found out that the CO is fairly far, but the RT was much closer.

What is RT?? Here's the specs the technician provided..

Cool - thanks for the link!! That explains a bit more.. any idea how the speed will be? Will it be as if I had a CO closer to me?

I'm almost 30,000 feet from my CO but get great speed with DSL. I know my neighborhood is on the phone company's fiber optic lines and I have to assume they're coming from an RT.

well dslextreme told me that since there is an RT, that's what i would be using.. and not the CO. I just wonder how these RT's work and the quality.. =) anyone else have experience w/ that? Also, i know that sbc is the underlying cable tho..

RT is a relay for the CO, what ever distance from the RT you are, it will be as if you were that far from the CO.

Not much you can do about it anyway even if it was a problem...your connection should be fine.

Your speed is determined by what you are buying....you should get really close to it.

well just debating between dslextreme which i have gotten up to 1.5 down which is awesome (where i am now) and only 5k from the CO.. but moving to a new place.. or going w/ cable. of course i have a static IP wher i'm now and would prolly want one for my new place as well.. hmm, hopefully this RT will be just as fast.

being 5k from a miniram you are going to get whatever speed they are selling you 1.5Mbps/784K/512K etc.

If you go with cable your max will be 3Mbps usually....however as many have discovered getting 128K on average sometimes is the way it works out. The more populated your area is the worst the throughput.

I'd recommend DSL if it's an option....the only time I wouldn't are in the areas where cable is available for $50ish give or take and DSL starts at $75 for 256K.
