DSL, bandwidth and multiple users....

I know the bandwidth on DSL isn't affected by how many users are on it like cable is. My question is does this also work on the end user's side. Meaning, if I have a DSL connection and 2 users on it, and the download speed is 1Mbps, do they share that 1Mbps or can they each download at 1Mbps? Also, does it work for people downloading from an FTP server on that connection? Do they each get the full download speed or is it shared?

Thanks,
David

i believe it must be shared, but if you use only 2 pc's for stuff like surfin the net, performance doesnt seem to suffer much.

Well, I have cable now, and it basically works that if I'm downloading a file at 100KB a sec, then my roommate can only download at 40-50KB a second. I was wondering if DSL would work differently.

In most cases when you order DSL service, you buy a Bandwidth deal.

If you buy a 384Mb/sec deal, that is what you get, so if you share, each computer will take a piece from the 384 Mb/sec.

Cable service works with large nodes, the more computers on the node (including your neighbors) the less the bandwidth, but it needs hundreds of computers to take a big toll on the system.
