Isn't that a deal combined with FreeDSL? You pay $17.99 + shipping + $25 setup fee and get the DSL service for free.

Is it compatible with FreeDSL? I thought they only support two types, Efficient SpeedStream 4060 USB and 3060 PCI modems.

wow! that's so cheap! $18 is already cheap for a 56k modem, but with DSL? dang. need to get one to experiment with. I'm currently with winfire (freedsl). if it works, it'll be a really hot deal! then you can sign up for winfire and say that you already have a modem, and save the $200 modem purchase with the free plan (144k w/ banners).

in regards to Efficient modems, they are not the only ones supported by winfire. I'm not even sure if winfire uses Efficient anymore. they had a defective batch come in when I was waiting for delivery on my modem in Southern California, so winfire switched to Alcatel modems. I'm glad they did because I heard about some Pac Bell DSL customers complaining that the Efficient modems caused crashes so they asked to be switched to Alcatel modems instead.

the only DSL modems that work with winfire are:

Efficient SpeedStream 4060
USB Modem

Efficient SpeedStream 3060
PCI Modem

and the new Alacatel Speedtouch...

the latter can be found on egay for about $80...

so , no this $18 one wont work

I agree with Billabong; as long as the modem can do PPPoE it should be fine (which also makes it viable for Verizon services)...but, it remains to be seen whether or not this thing can actually do it.

Should I assume that the 56k portion of this card acts as a Winmodem? Or no?

Is there anyway to get WinFire FreeDSL & Efficient Speedstream 4060 to work with a router and share internet access?

Please note that we do not warranty or support the DSL portion of the card at all.

What the heck is that supposed to mean???

There is a similar thread about this deal at fatwallet. The store president is posting there as well. You can use the coupon code COMPAQDSL (exp. 2/28) to get another dollar knocked off the modem. Coupon is posted by the store pres. on FW so I doubt it's "illegal" or anything.

Does anyone have the Winfire DSL Power service for $19.99?...just wondering how many k's do you get average on stuff like napster and or internet downloads.. I have Cox and paying $30 for service and $15 for modem rental.. Is it really that much better ...

I think the $20 winfire level gives you 384Kbps max, if you're within the optimal distance from the central office where the phone equipment is at. since the DSL will be provided through your local phone company, just call them and ask what your distance is and they can tell you what kind of speeds you'll hit most of the time.

I've got the free stuff w/ ads, and it's supposed to be 144Kbps, and my average speed is around there. might be a little faster if I didn't have those ads rolling in all the time.

if you go with premium level winfire, you can get max speed 1.5Mbps, no ads, free modem rental, for $35.

and it works great with napster. multiple simultaneous downloads each hitting around the max speed you subscribe to, assuming the user you're downloading from is running at a faster speed than you are.

If someone here purchases this $17.99 dollar 56K/DSL modem, please report back as soon as possible whether it actually works with the free DSL service, and what your throughput is. I think it's finally time for me to move on to a 100+Kbps connection, but I don't want to have to pay over $39.00/mo for it. Thanks.

jfunk, I'm assuming they put that up there because some DSL services are picky about what modems they'll allow to be used; basically the company doesn't want people complaining to them if the DSL portion of the modem doesn't work with a certain service.

dv8ed736, as long as the modem actually works with whatever service you sign up with, I don't see why you can't use a router. Most residential-aimed models nowadays support PPPoE, so it's a pretty sure thing.
