ds3 won't recognize nec dvd-rw after i installed gigabyte drivers

everything went remarkable smoothly in my new c2d install (first build ever)... hardware was a breeze, booting was easy, windows installed no problems.

but when i got to installing the stock gigabyte drivers *namely the Gigabyte SATA and RAID Driver, Intel ICH7/ICH8 USB 2.0 Driver and the Marvell Yukon Gigabit LAN chipset* things started going screwy and then windows decided to stop recognizing my nec dvd-rw drive. the weird thing is, cmos stil detects it... but nothing on windows. has anyone seen this particular problem? what do you suggest i do to correct it?

thanks in advance

Well, first suggestion is to make sure it is a software issue and not hardware. Go download Knoppix and burn the iso image (don't extract the files and burn them, but use a utility that can burn the image). Then try and boot the computer from that CD (it is a complete os that will run off the cd). If that doesn't work, then you might have bad hardware...
