I just picked up an WD SATA drive, and im trying to get it installed. Windows refuses to format the drive, I've tried both the pruple and orange SATA connectors. I can see the drive, the size, but it wont format. I assume this must be some issues with my SATA drivers, any way to fix that without a fresh windows xp install?

disk management is the right section for the process. when you install a new drive, you will have to initialize it in disk management which will basically take you through the partitioning and format process. it's 8am here :p

Yeah, nothing about initilization. i right click on the drive and the only option is format, and that fails

Are you trying to format and install Windows on an operating machine or one with no other HD than the WD?

You could try...
* Right Click on "My Computer"
* "Manage"
* "Disk Management"
Try exploring from there.

Have you tried another controller on the mobo? I had a board with a bad header, gave me immediate "write failed" errors in windows, drive worked great in other computers AND a different header on the same mobo.

Tried the 0 header on both the jmircon and intel controllers. I guess i could try a couple of the other ones.

check your Bios settings if I remember right there is a setting to allow a SATA drive to be used as a PATA it may be called legacy mode. I have the s3 board with the WD Sata drive and it wors great for me.

Tried switching that one more time just to double check, no luck. This is becoming one of the more frustrating problems ive had

If the BIOS is set to "Legacy Mode", then the problem isn't SATA drives. Windows will be using IDE drivers.

Thats a good point. Still can't fix it though. This is driving me nuts.

Have you tried a repair install? My mother's PC had problems not too long ago with 80004005 errors, and the only way I was able to get rid of them was via a repair install. That was a long night... walking a non-PC savvy user via a repair install over the phone from 1500 miles away...

So I got an email back from the guy with the same problem, he said he had a bad drive. I returned mine, got a replacement, having the same problem.

I don't know if this will help, but...
If you have a windows xp cd, use it to boot your pc.
choose that u want to install a windows on a partition, u can format the drive there.cancle the installation after the format is complete.
that's what I did when I had a DS3, wroked for me. I can't exactly remember what the problem was though.

For me on my DS-3, I can't use the Gigabyte SATA controller. (Purple slots.) It reads my disks as SCSI and I was getting some corruption
