DS or PSP

Hi.
Based on what you`ve seen about both, which do you think you`ll go for?

Imo, unless the PSP is really something special, then i`ll be going for a DS. Ive watched all the videos here;
http://www.nintendo.com/e3_2004/ds/index.jsp
And it looks very impressive. The dual screen thing can open up some whole new ways of gaming.

What about you lot?

I might go for the PSP after a couple years when it's reasonably priced. The DS is a far more interesting concept.

Based on info so far, I'd go with a PSP. I think the DS will be sort of neat, but it will either have a ton of semi-crappy games (a la Gameboy) or it will have very limited software (a la Gamecube). I just have a gut feeling that it's going to be a one trick pony that gets old very quickly.

2 screen thing looks awful. it seems like one of those things that's really interesting in theory, but that game developers will never be able to make good use of (beyond maps and such).

for me, though, it'll depend 100% of game content. whichever system has the best games is the one that I'll buy.

The DS does game boy games as well, maximising its game library already, and the GB games selection is vast, and alot of them are pretty good. Not semi-crap as you put it.

I'll probably get the PSP first. The PSP screen's so crisp, and the graphics of the demos looked really good. I also like having the analog stick there, instead of just the dpad. The DS is pretty interesting, can't wait to see what they do with the touchpad. I wish they let everyone mess with the good demos at E3 though. The psp felt more natuaral to hold, but both were a little bigger than I expected.

If the PSP gets over three major issues, it'll be great:
#1: Durability, both of the device and the optical media. Sony's consoles never had a great track record, and portables are abused much more than consoles.
#2: Battery life: 2.5 hours to 10 hours is a wide range, if the typical life is less than 6 there's going to be problems.
#3: Cost. $300 is alot for a handheld.

If the DS gets over one major issue, it'll be great:
#1: Games worth playing. There needs to either be some killer games, or atleast GBA/GBC compatibility.

It offers GBA/GB compatibility. That's one of it's major selling points. After seeing the metroid demo on it, I'm sold. The PSP is a beautiful device though...if it's usable without a honkin huge extended battery, I may buy one.

Likely PSP. From what I understand converting PS1 games to be PSP compatible requires minimal effort, mostly adjusting the game for a 16:9 display.

Why does this matter? Because whatever system comes out with a portable version of Chrono Trigger and/or Final Fantasy 6 or 7, I am buying. Doesn't matter what the cost is, it's mine.

Right now, neither. I'm going to need to be very impressed before picking up a DS. I still don't buy into the whole two screen thing. There will need to be some compelling reason for me to pick one up, like a really excellent game.

As far as the PSP is concerned, I'm worried about battery life, and most of all, the PRICE.

Oh god, that's a good point. I'm going to have to buy both if FF7 and/or Chronotrigger is available for the PSP. 🙁

I'll go with PSP as I'm a car freak and love the GT series and GT4 on it would rock.

I'm not going to get FF7 though as me and my little bro (9) has been playing it again. My bro has clocked about 90hrs on the dam thing! Completed it and I got him a Gold Chocobo and everything else. Knights of The Round and trying to beat Emerald and Rugby. The first time I completed it I did it pretty easily but I guess I just got lucky as it didn't take this many tries to do it!

But I stupidly DELETED THE MEMORY CARD?! wtf?! So that has pretty much haunted me for the past 3yrs or so LOL. Man that was a stupid thing to do considering how many hrs I have done it. Well now I have backed the saves my bro has done to another memory card

It's all about the games. I'll buy whatever system has the best games. The PSP certainly looks a lot cooler, but I have a feeling that Nintendo is going to revamp the DS a bit before it actually hits market.

IGN brought up an interesting point about the PSP; how it might just become a system of ports with game's that cost the same as their console counterparts.

Which begs the question would you rather have a specific game for your TV or for your small handheld. Or would you be willing to drop maybe $80-100 or so for both.
