I've never own a ds before and was thinking about picking one up when they are avaible again and was wondering if the system scratches easily and are dead pixels a problem with the system?

The bottom screen will get scratched up, but it's not a big deal. My DS came with a dead pixel, btw.

That dead pixel doesn't bother you?

I just finished Zelda and my wife is about half way through it and the bottom screen has a few minor marks, but I was amazed at how well it stood up. She abuses it, too, when she's trying to get free of a like-like. Her reaction to the like-like taking her shield was priceless. 🙂

i've bought two. no dead pixels that i can tell.

but the touch screen does scratch eventually. just get a set of screen protectors, thin plastic sheets that cover the screen and make the surface a little smoother to drag the stylus across. the japanese brands are usually better than the u.s. made stuff.

I haven't noticed any dead pixels. I use screen protectors because certain games will rape you touch screen. Elite Beat Agents and the Japanese versions being among the worse.

My bro has a DS from when the first came out, no dead pixels. The screen is pretty scuffed but you can only see it when the screen's off or at least really dark.

I got a DS Lite in December and haven't noticed any dead pixels. My daughters bought a year ago (white DS Lite) seems good also.

I am pretty picky about scratches etc so I will probalby pick up a screen protector in the near future. So far I've just tried to be careful and no scratches that I can see yet. I don't have any touch screen intensive games right now, just Sonic Adventure and Rune Factory: HM

No. I've learned to ignore it, and half the time due to the surrounding colors the pixel isn't noticeable anyway.

I haven't seen any dead pixels on my or my gf's DSs. I bought screen protectors for the screen. Mine only came with a bottom screen protector and wasn't very removable but fit perfectly while my gf's had top and bottom and we removable did didn't fit quite as nicely/

I had a dead pixel on my bottom screen, but I fixed it with a few hours of games and some pressure from the stylus. And scratches? Bottom screen will probably get scratched, but if you are careful not to drop it the top screen won't scratch.

definitely get screen protectors for the bottom at the minimum. it doesn't cause any glare or affect gameplay in a bad way. I got screen protectors for both.
I bought mine at launch awhile ago... had one dead pixel on the bottom screen: green and it didn't go away.
I called nintendo and had it fixed under warranty for free.

You can buy screen protectors, but you don't need them. I had one but eventually removed it, haven't actually scratched my screen in the year I've had mine. Just make sure your stylus doesn't have any sort of sharp edge on it and you should be good. As far as dead pixels go, my current one has one, my old one didn't have any. My friend replaced his when he got a dead pixel, I've never bothered because I can't really see it.

Just remember, for the most part, your bottom screen is your most important screen. Make sure it doesn't get scratched and doesn't have dead pixels. The top screen is often used for stuff like maps, radars, notes, inventory, etc. So it's a 2nd glance screen. The top screen becomes more important in games where they have you hold the DS like a book. So both screens are important, but the bottom doubly so.

I haven't seen any "book format" DS games yet. Which operate that way?

As for screen protectors, I'd imagine for people like me and Skace who are careful and avoid hard objects on the touch screen, scatches would be rare. In my case, I had a blue GBA-SP for over 5 years and while it did get moderate to light use, the screen had no scratches and the exterior had only light surficial scratches. I traded it on on my black DS and the guys at Game Stop were amazed at how good of condition it was - they were like "are you sure you want to trade this in?" LOL But it wasn't getting used anymore and I'd rather have the second DS (one for my daughter and one for me) which can play both GBA and SP games. Last weekend my daughter found her long lost Mario Kart game and we both raced using the download play on mine. I think its nice that two or more people can play a game without all having the cartridge.

However, I can see how many young kids can be very casual or borderline abusive with their "toys" and without some kind of care like cases and screen protectors, their DS could get pretty trashed after a year or two of regular use. My daughter is rougher with her DS and whacks the touch screen harder, tosses it in her purse or overnight bag etc. The exterior has numerous light scratches on it and the touch screen has a few very light scratches which are hard to see, especially with all the finger prints on it! 😛 It took her white DS and cleaned it up and only then did I really see the scratches on the outside and inside.

Mostly the brain training games - Brain Age 1 & 2, Big Brain Academy, etc.

I have a dead pixel on my DS but it only bothers me when the screen is black.

Also, the new ninja gaiden game will be played this way iirc. And if it is a success, I'm sure a few more will follow.

Yeah, I forgot about that one. That will be a definite change of pace as pretty much all the games have one screen atop the other with the exception of the brain training games.
