DS Lite for a 5yr old?

Homerboy

Lifer
Daughter is turning 5 soon. As a replacement for he lost/stolen Leapster learning system I was thinking of getting her a DS Lite so she had a wider range of games and activities available to her with some room from "Growth" too.

Neighbor kid just got a DS the other day, and they were saying what a hard time she's having with it... this girl is 8yrs old too. Got me worried if my 5yr old could handle it.

She's a WHIZ at using the PC to navigate websites and play her games that way. Obviously I'd be getting her games like Crayola Coloring, Build a Bear worksop, Nintendogz etc etc.

Any input from anyone?

I got a DS for my son when he was almost 5. He does fine with it for games like Mario Kart, Happy Feet, Yoshi's Island, etc. He needs help with games sometimes but he does OK for the most part.

As long as you find games that are at their level, it is all just buttons and what not.

She excels at the "what not"!!!

I think 5 is a good age to start. My son is 5 now (will be 6 next month) and we're planning on getting him a DS for his bday. Right now he plays New SMB and Pokemon on my DS without much troubles, he just needs a little assistance in Pokemon reading some of the more lengthly dialog stuff.

Theres a drawing game called Drawn to Life she will dig. Hell, I dig it. 🙂

Simple minds, simple pleasures.

I keed, I keed - D2L is a fun game!

Get some good screen protectors, but yeah. My youngest got to play on her sister's DS occasionally from the age of 3 or so.

DS is a gaming platform, Leapster is a learning platform. Buying a DS is a huge waste of money on a child that young. Of course how you spend your money is none of my business. Besides, everybody on this forum makes 6 figure salary.

Buying a replacement Leapster would be a wiser choice. /shrug

Isn't Leap Frog planning on bringing some of their Edu software to the DS? It just seems like the DS is the way to go, there are ton of educational titles as well as gaming titles.

Your neighbors kid is probably just slow, the DS is fine for a 5 year old. We just got one for our sons 6th birthday and he loves it. It took him a couple of days to get the hang of it, but now he's doing great. Up then he had a leapster. I think the 5 to 6 year old age is the right time to switch over from the leapster to the DS.

There are a ton of DS games made for kids in the 5-6 range. The DS has much more to offer, and will last much longer than a leapster for a kid that age.
