Dry Ice Bombs

lots of fun. every 4th of july i blow up dozens of dry ice bombs.

get a 16 oz plastic soda or water bottle. get some dry ice and a hammer. break the dry ice into small enough pieces to put in EMPTY bottle. after you get 5-8 chunks of dry ice in the bottle fill to 1/2 full of water, screw cap on and trow really fast. you will watch the bottle expand and hear the lable crack then BOOOOMMMM!!!! 😀

Dry ice is solidified CO2 gas. When it warms up, it sublimates into a much larger volume of CO2 gas. The CO2 has only a small container to expand into, so to pressure rises as more and more CO2 sublimates. Once the pressure threshold of the container is exceeded, it explodes.

its pretty simple

dry ice sublimanates (sp) goes directly from solid to gas, water speeds up teh priocess, put dry ice in a bottle with a lil water and put on teh cap, the dry ice will turn to gas FAST and because it cant escape it goes boom

Interesting, thanks for the info. We use to do the tin foil and drain cleaner bombs.

I have done the "The Works" bombs with The Works and Aluminum Foil.

The trick to not getting your hand blown off, is to squeeze the bottle a little before putting the cap on, so it takes more time for the bottle to completely expand.

Ahh, that's exactly what I was wondering. Just like the tin foil/drain cleaner there is chemical reaction which causes the gas to expand. I was wondering how dry ice alone would cause it to explose, water is the key then. mucho gracias.

Well, it isn't a chemical reaction- the reason water helps is that it heats up the dry ice much faster than if it were just air- there's a lot more thermal mass to heat up the dry ice. It will work without water- but it takes a lot longer, because the heat in the air in the bottle is not enough to allow the dry ice to sublimate much. The heat has to come from outside, which is more air, the sun, your hand, etc. If you just put dry ice in a bottle with no water, it can sometimes take hours to build up enough pressure. Sometimes people will do this at big public gatherings like concerts to get a rise out of people.

Fvcking hell!

At least he was smart enough to not grab the bottle by the main of it and not just the top cap part.

Good times. That bottle must have been pretty thick. The bottles we used would go much quicker. You have to squeeze the bottle before throwing as it buys you a few more miliseconds.

How fast exactly does the bottle blow after you pour the water in? I wanna try it, but at least need some guidelines lol
