Drunk driving accident: Rush to a bar and have a few drinks

on tv shows they have this scenario:
driver gets into an accident. he claims to goto a bar and have a few drinks to calm his nerves. thus why his blood alcohol is over the limit.

does this defense work in real life?
If not, how does the cops/DA debunk it?

he'll still get busted for leaving the scene but a good lawyer could dodge a DUI

not a lawyer but this just seems logical.

There was recently a story about Mad Men actress January Jones who fled after hitting 3 parked cars in LA. She panicked and left to go home (fleeing the scene of the crime). She later walked back (home was nearby) and the officer said he could not charge her with DUI since he does not know if she drank at home. Seems logical to me.
