1. Girl gets insurance policy puts a minimum payment down, about $120. 1-week later totals her car arrested for DUI. Insurance company gets to pay over $8000 for her car, luckily she didn't hit anyone else just an "object".

She was 18 too underage drinking FTL. Her excuse for drinking was, "I have to have a social life you can't take away my social life!"

Apparently it's impossible to have a social life without drinking..... Thanks for the higher insurance rates.

This girl is going to be a real winner? She didn?t even learn her lesson she still goes out and drinks....

2. In other news another guy drives while talking on the cell phone, looses his signal looks down to see what happened to his phone drifts out of lane into bike lane hit's and kills guy on the bike.

Don't drink and drive, don't talk on your cell phone while you drive, I have never seen someone drive and talk on the phone without it affecting them. :(

3. Oh then there is the man who was waiting at a stop sign and was rear ended, turns out he was hit by his wife, but she was pushed into him by another car driven by his daughter , all I could do was say I was sorry to him.

4. Another, a wife drove her car through the garage door..... Her explanation of the accident was my husband never told me I had to open the door before I drove in!

I could go on and on?

Ok it's a weak rant, and it's not like it's going to change anything either this will happen until the end of time but it's a little frustrating seeing all the crap that happens because people just don't think... and then seeing how the average good customer has to pay for it because if the company charged what is should for point people would cry that it was unfair.

Every time you see a crash, yea it was not you that was in it but in the big picture it affects your rates. :(

Around here the paper work for a DUI is about 3 hours. Hence one friend killed by a drunk and the other had his femur shoved up through his pelvis into his abdomen, niether driver recieved a DUI on their record. It's unfortuate that accpectance of alcohol consumption is so acepted.

In Michigan, they have driver responsibility fees.

http://www.michigan.gov/documents/DRBrochure_88983_7.pdf

If you accumulate 7 or more points on your license, you pay $100 a year, plus $50 for every point beyond 7. You pay this until you have less than 7 points on your license.

Certain things, like driving without a license or proof of insurance (or DUI) carry fees as well, ranging from $150 (expired license) to $1000 (DUI). You have to pay those for two years, in addition to any increases in insurance costs.

Usually the cost of a DUI over the 5 year period it still appears on your record is around $10K. What 18 year old can blow off this $10K without the parents being enablers?

I find it hard to believe that any police force would allow any of their officers to allow the cash cow of a DUI get away. Could you imagine the outcry from MADD?

They go up but not enough look at the first girl, she payed $120 the company payed $8000. She canceled her policy after the accident. Who got left with the bill. Yea that is how insurance works but it seems like she is getting away you know.

Hey I had gotten a brand new motorcycle many years ago. I put it in the back of my truck and brought it home. I called the insurance company on my way home with the bike in the back and got my insurance set up on it and they said just send the payment with your regular car premiums on the next cycle. a few nights later the bike was in the drive way and some a$$hole tried to steal it and did $3000 in damage to it. Insurance fixed it no questions asked and my rates never went up.

Or make the test more difficult, with stricter penalties for unlicensed drivers. The problem with restricting access to the privilege of driving is that many areas don't have an adequate mass transit system ("Why do we need one? Everyone can drive!").

This is a BS thread without any real facts. The OP posts vague stories. The first girl cancelled her insurance after? She really stuck it to the insurance company huh? Oh wait, how does she drive now? If she has a new provider, she's paying higher rates.

And like someone said, it costs a lot of money to get a DUI on your record. Lawyer fees, increased insurance, etc. $10k over 5 years sounds right to me. That's not cheap.

I hate drunk drivers. They should all run their cars into a tree and kill themselves.

She doesn't drive now that was her car she got and totaled out the week she got it. She does not have to pay 10K because she is able to get her grandparents to pay for a lot of the cost. You seem to have a chip on your shoulder over something, I dono maybe you are having a bad day or had a bad experience with a DUI. But hay let it out people at anandtech will help you with your problems, MUCHO helped me.

That's her penalty; She can no longer drive.

Also, just because her grandparents took care of the bill does not mean that she wasn't penalized in that regard.

One of the reasons why I have no confidence in people anymore, and why I hate teenagers.
