That was a horrific and surreal scene. I came across it on my way home. The whole intersection was blocked off. By the time I saw it, it was pretty much an investigation, recovery or rescue was already attempted. My friend is a medic trainer and a huge Angel's fan, she called me with the news.
My friend's got hit by a drunk on the same intersection a few years before. That place seems to attract drunks.
Given prior history, the verdict seems appropriate.

Any lawyer willing to defend this douche should be put in jail with him. Terrible.

Yeah!! Screw due process, innocence until proven guilty, the right to a fair trial, and the right to confront your accusers! Where has that really gotten us anyway?

Being a lawyer can really suck. Defending guys like this MUST suck, but somebody has to do it and I hope, for our sake and his, that he received the best defense he could.

It's his right... but I guess that doesn't really matter to you.

The problem with all these tough on crimes DA's is that they don't have to pay for locking this douche bag up for the next 50+-years to life. CA as a state is already broke and we cannot afford this type of stuff anymore. So basically this guy will spend the rest of his life in jail and cost the state $50k+ a year. If you want to be tough on crime then you need to willing to pay up for the cost of locking them up. If not then you really need to evaluate who you are locking up for these long prison terms.

Hmm. Donte Stallworth got a sentence of 30 days in jail, plus 1,000 hours of community service, 2 years of house arrest, and 8 years probation for doing the same thing.

Lets see how this plays out.

Many differences in the 2 cases. Not the same thing.

Not to defend the system - there are plenty instances where it has failed, but I'd say this was done correctly. Dude knew this was a possibility if he drove drunk AGAIN. This isn't the system crushing "the little people"

Prosecutors said they charged the case as a second-degree murder instead of the lesser charge of manslaughter because Gallo had a previous DUI conviction, had specific knowledge of the dangers of drinking and driving from his own experience, and had signed a court form from the earlier case saying he understood he could be charged with murder if he drove drunk again and killed someone.

I know, I wasn't attacking due process. I was drunk when I wrote that and referring to this in the article:

His attorney Jacqueline Goodman said Gallo would appeal. “I think it’s tragic,” she told reporters. “I think there’s been a miscarriage of justice.”

Her client killed 3 people, I think justice was served.

Why do people always bring up random cases that aren't even relevant?

Was this the one where some drunken asshole hit a white convertible, causing it to flip?

Maybe 50 years is kinda high, but he killed 3 people so not going to start feeling bad anytime soon.

5 years for blowing off your drivers head with a shotgun:

Murder/manslaughter charges

In the spring of 2002, Williams was tried for the shooting death of 55-year-old limousine driver Costas "Gus" Christofi at Williams's estate in Alexandria Township, New Jersey on February 14, 2002.[4] Christofi had been hired to drive Williams's NBA charity team from a Bethlehem, Pennsylvania event to his mansion, about 30 miles (48 km) northwest of Trenton, New Jersey. Members of Williams's NBA charity basketball team were present at the scene. The New York Post reported that Williams was playing with a shotgun while giving a tour of his 30,000-square-foot (2,800 m2) home when the weapon fired, killing Christofi.

That April, Williams was acquitted of the more serious charges against him, but the court's jury deadlocked on a charge of reckless manslaughter. He was convicted on four counts of trying to cover up the shooting. In January 2003, the family of Costas "Gus" Christofi settled with Williams in a wrongful death civil lawsuit for $2.75 million.

On April 21, 2006, a Hunterdon County appeals court ruled that Williams could be retried on a reckless manslaughter charge stemming from the shooting death of Christofi.[5][6] The court repeatedly delayed the retrial for a series of reasons, such as the State's 2008 appeal of a ruling relating to prosecutorial misconduct at the first trial.[7]

On January 11, 2010, Williams pled guilty to aggravated assault.[8] On February 23, 2010, he was finally sentenced to 5 years in prison with possible parole after 18 months.[9]

Lesson Learned: When recklessly and unintentionally killing people use a firearm instead of a car.

Why are you comparing a DA from NJ to a DA from OC?
Maybe you can link cases in OC?

Not even close to the same thing. Try again.

I actually feel bad for him after I read 50 years... but you know what... this is his 2nd time. Fuck him.

And it shouldn't take deaths for these types of convictions to happen. I don't care if you kill a tree... lock him up for 5, minimum.
