I've got an '89 chevy corsica. I just pulled the rear drums off and replaced the brake pads. I need to take the drums and get the ground (or maybe just replace them). But, I didnt have time to do that yet, so i just changed the pads.

Now the thing is that I was driving around (like 3 blocks) and I can smell them getting hot. Is this necesarily a bad thing or are they just wearing in?

Most of the time brakes smell bad when you first put them in, but after awhile the smell will go away. If it doesn't then somethings wrong

The smell is probably from the "shoes" having to burn down to fit the grooves in your drums. Sounds like a bit of extra work, but I've done the same. I pulled the whole fuel rail off to change 1 injector. I didn't have $480 for the other 3.
