I noticed today that the opium production in Afghanistan had increased 6% from 2002 and 2003. Remembering also that the Bush administration has constantly been linking terrorist activities to drug trafficking I am left wondering what exactly we accomplished in Afghanistan other that removing the Al Queda government and freeing up a major oil pipeline. Looks like if we were trying to actually curb terrorist activities we would wipe out all the poppy fields there and limit their funding.

hey now don't mess with the poppies. That could make the price of bagels go up and then Israel would be mad at us.

Well the "DEA partner nation" Taliban were effective at halting opium production with their draconian measures. Now the farmers of Afghanistan can make something like 10x the money growing opium instead of wheat or whatever. The current government doesn't have the ability to enforce drug laws, and there apparently aren't enough international forces there to do so either.
