Drug Lords Develop Genetically Modified Cocaine Tree
LONDON (Reuters) - Colombian drug lords have developed a genetically modified "cocaine tree" that contains higher drug levels and is resistant to herbicides, the Financial Times newspaper said on Tuesday.



Drug producers received help from foreign scientists to develop the leafier strain of plant, which grows to 9 feet, twice the height of the normal shrub, the newspaper said, citing a Columbian police intelligence dossier.

"In their search for greater profits, drug-traffickers appear to have entered the world of genetically-modified crops," the dossier was quoted as saying.

The tree yields eight times more cocaine than the normal shrub, and due to its size and sturdiness is more resistant to herbicides - one of Colombia's main weapons in the war on drugs.

Yeah i saw a documentary on National Geographic about that, the U.S is down there in columbia with special teams to find coca fields and then they dispatch planes to throw pesticide on them.

I guess they better rethink the plans now.
 
What do you expect they are drug LORDS, vertible lords of the drugs, " I am the drug commander!, I rule the drugs!"......... of course they are on the cutting edge 😛

The article I read detailed a researcher smuggling some leaves from the herbicide-resistant strain to be tested, and the evidence seemed to point to selective breeding rather than genetic modification.
It also discussed how the spraying kills the legitimate crops as well as the cocaine (which hurts the farmers who are trying to do right).

Columbia has like a project to get farmer to not grow coca, but hey they make little money growing beans compared to coca.
