Drug finding airplanes

Hi guys I was wondering if anyone was familiar with what I'm talking about. I want to find more information on the airplanes the government uses to see if people are growing drugs in their back yard, etc. However, I have absolutely no idea what to search for. Does anyone know how they work? Do the plants give off a thermal signature?

AFAIK, you are correct in your assumption on the "thermal signature".

Although, anyone with a pair of eyes can tell a bright lime-green patch of foliage looks quite a bit different than the surrounding plants :p

but IIRC the equipment used is based on detecting irregular amounts of heat coming off certain types of plants.

They use Thermal Imaging Cameras to detect the Glow Lamps. Even when the lights are in the house they still stick out like a sore thumb.

Edit Usually the cameras are mounted in big round turrets on the nose of Helocopters.

but the heat signature is also detected with outdoor grow-ops, correct?

i realize we are treading a thin line discussing this, but there is a science aspect to it, which hopefully prevents this from being locked.

I'm not sure, but I think most outdoor growers are found just by sight or informants. they are easy to spot from the air.

I think outdoor plants could be almost impossible to spot if they were placed in close proximity to similar plants.
Actually they do detect the plots that the grows are in by the disturbance of the ground, ( holes for planting reveal cooler earth than the surrounding, mulch piles make warmer spots) the irrigation systems ( regularly spaced "cooler" spots from the emitters, a big cool patch from the "tank", hot spots from batteries or generators or pumps) and finally the plants themselves, a conifer has a different heat signature than a cannabis.

Won't work in the winter time. One easy sign of a grow op, is when every roof in a neighbourhood is covered in snow except yours. The plants/lights can give off enough heat to melt the snow from ones roof. (Assuming you have an established grow operation, and not just a plant or two)

They've also been experimenting with low-flying copters where they dangle drug-sniffing dogs from special harnesses, with the dogs trained to bite a switch when they pick up the scent.

This works even if you're using a thermal canopy or have covering plants like trees.

Not just "thermal" signature I'd imagine, but the entire spectrum, just like any other plants. You can tell different varieties of cotton apart from their spectral signature. You can also use aerial photographs, because marijuana plants are pretty distinctive.
