ANTIQUE cider press? You're making me feel old - then again, I am old. That's pretty much what we used back on the farm when i was a growing up. I'm sure my farming brother still uses it. N. Ohio, Mennonite family farm. For us it was a group thing, lots of us taking turns and working together. Looks odd with just one person. One very efficient person :) .

Are your wild trees descendents of Johnny Appleseed trees? That was the story back where I lived. Darned good for cider.

Great video, thanks for posting! Goats are adorable.

I'm now going to take a nap, just watching made me tired. That stuff is work.

Looks like your flywheel could use a little straightening out, seems to wobble a bit :p

That's pretty cool. Tastes better than the pasteurized stuff from the stores I'm sure. Pasteurizing changes the flavor of the cider a bit :(

Oh and for those of you who wouldn't drink it without it being pasteurized, well, do you also insist on cooking your apples before eating them? :p

So long as he doesn't use any wind fall apples and washes them he should be fine. However if he does use any windfalls then I really would be concerned about pasteurization. Food poisoning is not fun, just ask the 16+ how have died of listeriosis recently. Note I'm not saying this is a risk here.

That's a very good point - nope, every last apple is tossed out of the tree onto a couple of tarps. If they miss the tarp, they don't go home. With deer and other critters hopping around the trees (mice, whatever), I don't want food that's been in contact with the ground there.

Wow nice big place and great video. How do you maintain a place like that?

I am pretty sure its safe to rinse the apple that touches the ground. What makes you so sure that the critter doesn't mess with the apple when they are up on the tree?

The chances of fecal contamination is much higher when the apples hit the ground. I press ground apples, but I heat and pressure seal the cider into gallon jugs. This helps kill off contamination and stops the cider from turning to vinegar.

Even the ones on the tree carry a small but non zero risk. Squirrels, rats, and birds can easily climb all over the apples in the trees. Probably not something you should really worry about though, just saying. How do you clean the press after using it BTW? All that sugar and exposed wood sounds like a perfect condition for mold and bacterial growth.

It's MUCH easier for the windfall apples to be contaminated with fecal matter. It's the shit from the deer that's particularly worrisome. And a simple rinse will not suffice to get the bacteria off.

Trust me I know about food poisoning. Caused by a college cafeteria. Been there, done that, but don't have the shirt yet :p

My father came down with a serious case on a trip to China back in the early 90s. He went to the hospital which in those days were not too clean. But it's a good thing he did cause they put him on a fluid IV drip and he rapidly improved. His life may have been in danger had he not done that.

Actually, that was the common "wisdom" concerning wooden cutting boards for years - people declared that plastic boards would be more sanitary than wooden cutting boards. Then, someone finally decided to test that hypothesis and demonstrated that it's incorrect.

Anyway, before using, relatively strong bleach solution & 10 minutes or so, then a lengthy rinse with fresh water. After using, a very thorough rinsing with water, and I also scrub with a washcloth.

That's why in more civilized countries, you'd be allowed to turn those fallen apples into hard liquor.

Just spent 3 hours picking apples. That sucked. It's been raining all day, non-stop. I'd be up on the top of the ladder, tossing apples down onto a tarp (no apples off the ground - mice, etc.) and one of the front legs of the ladder would suddenly start sinking into the ground, causing the ladder to tip over in slow-motion. I was lucky I never fell out. Plus trudging through the orchard with shoulder high goldenrod that's soaking wet... I'm soaked to the bone. My knee-high rubber boots had 1/4 inch of water in the bottom of them, just from running down my legs. Wife didn't help, son didn't help, come January when I'm drinking cider, it's MINE MINE MINE!

edit: well, my wife just brought me a nice cup of hot chocolate, with lots of mini-marshmallows in it. She can have some cider.

You could also relax and wait with an umbrella for the apples, Isaac Newton Style. :awe:
