Drove Toyota RAV4 the other week

I rented a compact SUV for Burning Man, and when I came to pick one up from a rental place, they were out of 'Kia Sportega' or whatever it was supposed to be, so I got Toyota RAV4.

I was expecting something like a rolling boat, leaning in corners, slow on takeoff, spongy braking, barely cranking 55 mph across Sierra Nevada, but... wow! This thing really surprised me, and in a very positive way.

It had excellent handling for a high-clearance vehicle, great braking, and it packed a punch under the hood. I was expecting the cheapest trim from a rental, but I got a 4WD V6 version. It hauled ass on route 80 across the mountains, fully loaded with all the stuff we had. And I mean _loaded_ - we packed it to the gills.

Needless to say, it also accommodated all our stuff, and could take more! Granted, we put down the backseats, because we had only 2 people in the car, but all our bags, tents, crates, and even 2 bikes fit inside without any problems, and I still had the roof rack unused.

Mileage wasn't bad at all either: I refilled 3 times for a total of almost 1k miles driven.

Great car for trips like we had.

My dad has a 1997 RAV4 AWD. Best car he's owned with now over 200K miles.

I like what it originally was...small, efficient, lots of plastic on the body with less paint. I hate what it has become, big and bloated and up-scale. Toyota now needs a mini SUV to fit below the RAV4, called the RAV3 perhaps? It has gotten so big my dad is really would not replace his old one with the current one. He loves how small it is. He needs it small for getting down small, hardly existent dirt roads to off the map fishing holes. A car that can take all sorts of scrapes on its plastic-paneled body.

Anyway, Toyota made the RAV4 too big for fat Americans...and it sucks now.

and I really like how the RAV4 has evolved.

The tank is about 16 gallons I believe. I filled up with a quarter left each time.

C/D says the RAV4 V6 is the most fun you can have in a Toyota. Not saying too much, but it is apparently a lot more engaging to drive than any of their fake "sport" models like the Corolla S or Camry SE.

my mom loves her 99 RAV4, she bought it new...it still only has around 60k on the clock. They have looked at newer ones, but haven't felt the need to update.
