They did some shady stuff & raised my fees after paying the exact same amount for 3 years, so I think it's about time to stop paying the ridiculous $50/month for Road RUnner, so I'm going to go DSL i think.

I'm in San Diego, so i could go through the phone company, Pac Bell (SBC Yahoo), but just seeing if anyone had any better recomendations.

Thanks

Was in the same boat...

I got tired of payin for Comcast Cable, just for surfin/streamin Sirius/or downloadin a movie here and there. Switched to Verizon/Yahoo at $14.95 per month and couldn't be happier. Still do all the same things :)

i guess my only real problem with switching is that since i don't have a telephone line, i'll probably need to get one :-/ so that'll add a healthy amount to my bill, but i still think it'll come out at least $10 cheaper

Maybe not, here in New England you can get Verizon dsl without a phone. 15 bucks a month for a 90K line.. not too shabby.

phone is gonna cost about $16 for base service, so im ok with that, but im just worried cuz none of these DSL guys offer any trials or guarantees. so if i find out the speed sux, im basically stuck for 1 year. im expecting a drop in speed, but not sure how drastic. My Time Warner Road Runner gets about 300kb down & 40kb up.

i inquired with DSLExtreme how far i am, and they said that i'm 25,000 feet from the main box, but SBC's setup a connector box 10,000ft from me. so not sure what that means to me, their basic package ranges from 384 - 1500. So i wish i could see what end of that spectrum i fall under.

any ideas?

I think my RR is like $80, Basic cable and RR service. I don't watch enough TV to justify digital or premium channels.

EDIT> Though the $16.99 local DSL offer has my attention over my ~$50 RR service. I could get basic cable and DSL for about $40-50/month.

I used to have DSL service (not through Verizon) and while the service was fine I would not switch back even though it is cheaper. I'm splitting the bill with housemates for the cable internet and Dish Network's America's Everything Package. Not cheap but well worth it IMHO. Be prepared for a DRAMATIC speed decrease if you do a lot of heavy downloading like I do. From the rates you posted it looks like you're on a 3 megabit down plan. The highest you can get is a 1 megabit it seems from Verizon so cable in comparison will be 1.5 times faster than DSL. Upload will stay the same pretty much so for the purposes of gaming you probably won't notice a difference. Kindof sucks that you're paying that much for 3 megabits where the same amount gets me 6 megabits from Comcast and they may increase it to 8 megabits.

I've got Time Warners all in one package for about $132 a month. It includes roadrunner, unlimited calling and digital cable with one box. Not the greatest price but it is for three different services.

Is roadrunner's 8 Mbps download and 512Kbps upload speed worth the extra money?

Cox didn't even offer this when I lived in New Orleans.

All they had was 5 Mbps but it was more expensive than their 4 Mbps package.

I have the RR Work@Home service and couldn't be happier. $80/month for static IP and double upload bandwidth, I go for it b'c I get cable for free. The thing is on and fast all the time, I go months without interruption. There are just no close alternatives.

Get your DSL from your local POTS if the deal is acceptable and their rep is ok. If you get a 3d party DSL provider, when you have problems it's too easy for them and the wire provider to just point fingers at each other while your internet is down.

Just call RR and tell them you want to get put on the billing plan for whatever the current special is. That's what I always do. Never had a problem at all.

What do you all get with Roadrunner's first speed plan and second speed plan ? Just curious ? Speedwise. Not what it suppose to be what you all really get in speed?

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Speakeasy. www.speakeasy.net
They are BY FAR the best DSL provider around. I have had them for 3 years now. EXCELLENT customer service. They were the first to provide DSL without needing a phone number from the phone company. They offer VoIP with dedicated QoS which all stays on their network. And their policies are, it's your line, do what you want with it. I host on my 6mb/768k line and it is FAST.

Seriously, they rock!

And WAY better ;)
But I can totally understand wanting to pay the additional costs.
