Dropping in a X2 4600+

I'm wondering if I drop this proc into my system if I absolutely NEED to reinstall windows. Will I be able to gain normal functionality without doing this?

In your case there's absolutely no reason to reinstall the OS. See this thread for additional info.

You need to make sure that your mb bios is up to date and supports the cpu before you swap anything otherwise windows will just update your config to add the new core.

I know the bios is up to date and the mobo can handle the CPU. I just noticed people talking about something called a HAL....what the heck is this?

Windows' Hardware Abstraction Layer

You shouldn't have to worry about this if you are simply installing a processor with a higher multiplier.

well i'm going from a single core A64 3000+ to a A64 X2 4600+. Will this matter?

No, I don't think so. You usually have to worry about that if there are certain changes in the chipset logic. Since th A64 single and dual core share the same no die NB (SRQ and cross-bar), and the rest of the onboard chipset is also the same, I don't see any reason to be concerned.

It usually isn't a problem because windows will reconfigure itself. If you install the chip and windows doesn't recognize the two cores then you need to change your HAL to ACPI Multiprocessor. You do this by going to your System properties and then the hardware manager.

I just dropped in an X2 4600+ in place of my 3700+ without any problems. Windows XP recognized the new hardware and rebooted.

If this doesn't happen, then the previous post has the info you need to make it happen manually.

I also dropped in a X2 4600. Re-installed XP Pro. Installed latest AMD drivers. BIGO all is well!
