Accidentally dropped my laptop (dell vostro 1520) and now when I turn it on, it starts booting up, but as it's booting up, it shuts down. I opened up the back and i saw that the fan (see pics) stops running, and that's when the laptop stops working.

At some point it actually booted up, but after a few minutes again, fan stopped working, and the laptop shutdown. By the way, the power button remains on, but the power indicator light shuts off (pic here) when the fan stops working. The wifi indicator light though, remains on.

When I opened up the back of the laptop, I only made sure that the fan was not loose, and it wasn't. Everything seems to be firmly attached to the motherboard, and wondered if the fan went bad or if the motherboard is damaged.

I'm not in the USA so buying spare parts is not as cheap but I can have a relative mail me the fan from the USA as I saw they are cheap over there.

Question is...would the drop most likely messed up the fan, or could it be something more serious like the motherboard being damaged and then that's why the fan is not working?
thanks!

Cross your fingers that it is only the fan. I would get a new fan and go from there.

Yea, problem is, not being in the usa makes things a lot more expensive. If i was in the usa, yep, i would get the fan, move on to the next step.

I've had items shipped and they get lost (stolen :whiste: ) and that is lame. That's why wanted to see before i order one if it could be something on the motherboard...I mean, fan looks 'solidly' attached so i wonder if something got messed up/loose on the motherboard.

The fan is probably fine. The fan connector is what most likely broke. Fixing it might not require any parts at all, just labor.

Is this the fan connector?

(couldn't figure out how to embed pic)

I have a spare dell latitude...to test the connector, can i just connect the fan from the dell latitude to that connector and see what happens? I mean, if i take the fan from another laptop and just connect it to the white thing to see if it stops running---is that safe to do?

Yes, that's the fan connector.
As long as the connectors, voltages, and pin-outs are the same on both laptops, you should be able to swap the fans for testing.
