Dropped my bike yesterday...

I was turning around on a back road and caught my tire on a groove in the pavement. Couldn't correct it and down I went. To add insult to injury my left foot was pinned under the bike and I could not free it if my life depended on it. I noticed the engine was still running so I quickly hit the kill switch. Fortunately, a few kind souls hopped out of their cars to assist me and make sure I was okay. They lifted the bike off of me and asked me if I wanted help moving it to the side of the road but I just thanked them for their help and said I was just going to ride off. I started the bike up and rode away.

Left side tank panel is scuffed a bit, very minor actually, the left hand guard is broken, the mirror is scratched and deranged a bit and the shift lever is bent. I moved the mirror back into place for the ride home but then parked it.

My left foot is sore but nothing broken fortunately. Thank my SIDI boots for that I guess and oddly enough I managed to somehow jam two fingers on my right hand, the middle and ring fingers. Those REALLY hurt and I can barely move them but I don't think they're broken.

I probably won't be riding for a few days at least until my hand feels better anyway as I would have difficulty operating the front brake.

I guess it is officially broken in now?

Meh, what are you gonna do.

Last night I was beating myself up over it but that is not productive. Just fix the damage and move on. I'm happy it wasn't worse. I could have easily broken bones in my ankle or foot and then it would have been a ride to the hospital and a tow for my bike.

It does happen. I remember one time i was going to whip around on gravel, on my enduro like I had done many times.
I had on regular jeans. When I went to put my foot down as the tire started spinning, the cuff hooked the peg and kicked the wheel out just slicker than snot. My boot sole never touched the ground

Sounds like one of those "dumbass" whoopsies moments that are more embarrassing than anything else. Even if it wasn't a genuine dumbass whoopsie, I bet it looked like one from a distance. Had a Nighthawk that had a whole collection of my own dumbass whoopsies on the frame and tank.

I remember the accident that led to my ride of shame home and sore finger\elbow.
Was looking at the side of the road and thats where my ZX-11 went. Kept it up but when I tried to get it back on the road the front wheel hit the lip of the asphault and next thing I know I'm watching my bike do a little spin the bottle action in the road.
It stopped spinning when it with one end pointed at woods and the other pointed at the pick up driver who witnessed it.
Side note: ZX-11 is not only heavy. Its awkwardly heavy when its on it side.

I still have the rashed up plastics hanging in my garage.

Glad you're ok. I managed to sell my bike before I went down. Still have all my gear though in case I have any lingering regret.

my wife dropped my BMW 1200RT. dead stop in our driveway, short legs to close to the bike, bike tipped and she could not stop it.... got a nice rash on the left pannier. she is perma banned from riding my BMW. only her cruiser for her.

I had a similar incident happen to me in an intersection when I turned and drove over a wet spot of antifreeze that was there from a previous accident. A Cop saw it and I was charged with careless.

It wouldn't have been a problem if I hadn't been going slowly. At slow speeds it is easier to upset the bike. I also had more weight in my top case than I'm used to so maybe that threw me off a bit too.

I was riding my RD-350 (Yamaha 2 stroke) after it had rained. The roads had dried but when I entered a turn there was a puddle at the apex and I maneuvered to avoid it. Well, I missed the water but hit the ring of oil just outside of the puddle and within 1.5us I went from slightly leaning into a turn to sliding 150 feet. The rain had ended and the roads were "mostly" dry but the worst part was the oil ring -- slick as snot. Good times!

Aaagh, that's how I dropped mine. Normally I don't have short legs. It was a paved parking lot, (Campus McDonalds on N High, for any Buckeyes out there) but it had a pretty good slope on one end and I tried parking there. It was fine just sitting there. But when I swung over, two factors sealed my fate. The right side of the bike was on the down slope, so my leg had farther to go for it to land. And, maybe partially because of the first issue, I landed my foot too close to the bike. The bike came up to center and then just kept coming. I'm hopping over trying to get some kind of leverage and keep my feet. Managed to keep my feet but the bike bit it. A bit of rash on the fairing where the mirror stalk banged into it, and scuffed up the valve cover a little. Many cuss words were muttered.

Have you priced out repair cost yet?

The plastic brush guard that houses the turn signal is surprisingly cheap at only $25 so I had the dealer order me one of those. The mirror housing is scratched up but otherwise fine. The bar end is scuffed and the shift lever is also rashed but I don't care about that. The tank is plastic and is covered by 3 painted panels that are replaceable. The one I rashed is $600 and the shift lever is bent but I bent the shift lever on my Ducati Monster worse than this and bent it back so I think I can do the same with this.

I think my left foot probably prevented more damage because the water pump is on that side of the engine and that is frequently a point of impact and damage on the left side along with the engine case which sustained no damage at all.

I don't think I'm going to bother replacing the tank panel so repair cost is $25.

I'm thinking I probably won't go through insurance for this. Hell, even if I replace the tank panel at some point it wouldn't be worth claiming. :biggrin:

Been down 6 (best I can recall) times on a street bike. Three at about 25 or so MPH. Two involved catching the centerstand while taking a left at too much of an angle. Three were at less than 5 MPH.

Honestly, I think I have to thank SIDI for that. If I wasn't wearing those boots (SIDI Air Vertigo) I probably would have had more than just minor bruising on my left foot.

God bless you bikers, as you really have nothing to protect you when (not if) you go over. Jules, hope everything heals up quickly, but the older you get, the longer it takes to heal, and those knee and ankle injuries tend to flare up on cold days.

I'll stick to the trails here in PA. Did about 60 miles yesterday, and no grooves attacked me.

Well, that's what they looked like new (that is not a pic of my boots BTW, just a random pic I found online). This is more recent. They do hold up well I think.
