Drop modem connection for incoming calls.

I am at my parents? house for at least one month (probably six months); and I am in a predicament. I use the internet a lot for my job and also currently for gathering information regarding graduate studies.

My mother is upset because she can?t receive calls and wants me to put in a second phone line. I really can?t afford another expenditure ever month of twenty or thirty dollars and need an alternative. I thought maybe I could put call waiting on our main line and that might drop my internet connection. I have no experience in this area, so anyone with ideas please tell me.

It's been along time for me since I had a modem. But my understanding is that it will drop your connection to allow a call to come in.

Also, most modems nowadays support V.92. This allows a call to come in and will allow your internet connection to stay alive for a short time. You can also make outgoing calls, but I could never get that to work. Your modem must support V.92 and have the software for it, your ISP must also support V.92. You must also have call waiting on your phone line.

Having said all that, I do not think you need to have all that V.92 hoopla enabled to have an incoming call kill your internet conection and allow that incoming call. All you need is call waiting.

I've kind of talked in circles here, hope you understand what I'm trying to say.
