I built this as a budget rig in early 2010 so it's pushing 4 years old.

I'm running an MSI H55M-P31 with an Intel i3 @ 2.93 GHz. This was when the i3/5/7 first came out so it's still pretty low end even in that regard.

Here is the list of compatible CPUs available for my motherboard (assuming most recent BIOS installed).

http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/mb-MSI/H55M-P31.html

It looks like the higher end i7 CPUs like the i7-870 go for about
$140-$150 on ebay, while the higher end i5s can be had for a little less (i5-680 ebay).

I know that alot of software isn't exactly coded to take advantage of 3 and 4 core CPUs and so I wonder if the higher clock speed of the i5 would offset the 2 in the i7.

As of late I have taken up some video editing on Sony Vegas. While this PC does the job, I can tell that I'm pushing it to it's limits at times. But beyond that I have no complaints. The SSD I got for it last year breathed new life into it so I'm still happy with it for the time being.

I7 870 is $139 on ebay free shipping and is your cheapest, yet decent upgrade. You'll notice it being faster for video editing especially.

i7 it is.

Based on current prices, it appears that I can sell my i3 for $40 so that'll bring me down to a $100 upgrade which isn't too bad. I might look at getting some extra ram though.

This should defend me against the upgrade bug for a year or two.
