a thinkpad T42p?? You can get it with a 128MB FireGL T2, which is pretty much just an OpenGL certified Radeon 9600, and a 15" screen.

I would consider an Athlon 64 based laptop. Athlon 64's are generally faster in gaming while P4's are generally better in encoding and other multimedia work. I believe VoodooPC sells an Athlon 64 based lappie. That and mobile athlon64's run slightly cooler to P4's due to their lower frequency.

no T42 lovin?? i know the OP said that it need to be beautiful, and the T42 will never win any beauty awards, but it's WAY lighter than the rest of those laptops. And pretty much the only thing those "gaming" laptops have that the T42 doesn't have is the widescreen or the 17" monitors.

The T42's video board is clocked lower than those larger notebooks, plus it is a waste of several hundred dollars to get a workstation card just to remove the workstation class drivers to use hacked catalyst drivers.
I can see that money is no object but to buy something that is worse just to use it in an unsupported way is just not a smart move, even if it is to save a few lbs.

The voodoo M:860 is probably the way to go, not as heavy as a M780, has a higher resolution screen, powerful video card, powerful cpu, and gets very respectable battery life.

For a lighter choice the voodoo M:360 would be better, even longer battery life, same video card but clocked lower because of heat in a thinner and lighter form factor.

for the M:860, the only choice is voodoopc, but for most other gaming llaptops you can look toward cheaper places like hypersonic.

I have heard bad things about Alian and Voodoo as well.. I can post the link if you want.. I would Def suggest an AMD 64 based lappy. But as for the maker that is up to you.. Most online makers/sellers offer one.

Money no object....I wish I were you. :D
I've heard bad things about Alienware, but not Voodoo. The only complaint I hear about Voodoo is the price (a very valid complaint indeed).

Basically you want to get the inards of a T42p and put them in a Powerbook case... lol... I would seriously consider the T42p if I were you. It's not so beautiful... but it's a capeable machine... for more than just gaming. If you're so hard up for gaming why not build a nice SFF gaming rig and with the money you save buy a classy yet relatively cost efficient notebook. I mean with $4000 you could easily do this; have the performance you want, and still have a notebook...

For straight up performance the Dell XPS with the 9800 is going to be the fastest. Yes yes blasphmey you say, but its true. It has 8 Pipelines where the 9700 has 4, etc... Its going to be faster, but it won't be as pretty. Infact I think the XPS is pretty ugly. But if performance is what your after the XPS is what you want.

Personally, I would get a T42. But I'm not you.

If you're still looking, I would wait until the Mobility 9800 is available in other brand notebooks (aside from Dell) and then pick. Dell has a lock on the 9800 for the first month, but after that you should see the 9800 all over the place at most of the big notebook makers (with Mobile Athlon64 CPUs which I recommend)

the MR9800 is meant for DTR in mind and just about DTRs only, you wont see a light laptop with a MR9800 or else it will be severely crippled elsewhere in performance. However right now it seems nothing can match a MR9800 as it offers as good if not better performance than a desktop 9700 Pro.

I've got a Sager DTR notebook and I keep track of things going on there. Supposedly Sager is going to skip the MR9800 in favor of PCI-e notebook technology which supposedly will finally establish a removable video card standard and from there you can choose to go with either ATI or nVidia (as right now most systems have the GPU soldered onto the mobo) as well as have the ability to upgrade on down the road. Granted even that solution sounds like it might be pretty heavily exclusive towards DTR notebooks, we'll just have to wait and see what happens. And I'm positive that Alienware is doing the same, so buying a top of line notebook now might have you kicking yourself as soon as winter comes around and we see the first PCI-e notebooks with mobile x800 and 6800s with the option of upgrading your GPU on down the road.

Once the Compaq R3000Z has the MR9800 in it, I'm sold. Though I saw some of Sony's lcd screens, the ones with the glossy finish, and they look beautiful :)

You list unsurpassed beauty before gaming performance....

so perhaps the Asus W1N.

It has the Mobility 9600.

The M6000 with Dothan and Mobility 9700 will be higher performing and still lightweight with a carbon fiber chassis.
