The drone owner would likely walk onto the guy's property to recover if it crashed. Those things aren't cheap! He can beat 'em up then.

Would not work, most, including mine have a failsafe function, and will return to where they were launched, and land if they lose signal. Mine will climb 75 feet before doing so.
EDIT; perhaps if you were to jam most, if not all 6 GPS satellites that guide it?

Meh, at least it'll work as a repellent, and the cheaper models just come to a hover at low altitude.

He's saying that "drone" is a misnomer when applied to these small UAVs. These are simply UAVs. Technically, it's only a "drone" if it flies itself to the coordinates you give it, and enters a holding pattern automatically -- with no need to be piloted directly.

Anyway, the air above your property is sometimes occupied by aircraft.

As for aircraft, that's why the signal wouldn't be that powerful.

I'm just saying it would be a fun engineering project. I doubt I'll ever find the time to figure out all the field theory.

I don't even think it's really "semantics." If you have to pilot the thing, it's not a "drone." I have no idea why that name stuck.

Yes. I would say that is a drone. If you have to control it constantly, directly piloting it, then that's not a drone. I assume 95% of them are the cheap not-really-a-drone type that have no GPS guidance.

Well in that case we might as well do away with the term "drone strike". Even predators are piloted.

Like it or not, technically accurate or not, "drone" now refers to everything from the Global Hawk to the $35 mall kiosk quad-copter.

A BB gun would probably take one down and you would not be charged with discharging a firearm in a dangerous fashion. I've got one of those old Daisy one's from the '50's that will sink a BB into marine plywood.

Yeah... you can get a Hubsan quadcopter with a camera for $50 now. Just be careful where you fly it. One good crash on concrete or pavement will obliterate it... trust me 🙁

A BB gun would probably take one down and you would not be charged with discharging a firearm in a dangerous fashion. I've got one of those old Daisy one's from the '50's that will sink a BB into marine plywood.

He was below Chimp With Stick (CWS) altitude, and more like Lightly Tossed Rock ( LTR) or Garden Hose (GH) altitude.
The neighbors he riled up were too slow or they could have just chased it down 🙂

Buy a bunch of dirt-cheap quadcopters on Amazon. Kamikaze's making a comeback.


Or go for something pricey and sophisticated, and do a synchronized Zerg rush to escort it out of your airspace.


Or...outfit it with something suitable for capture. Increase your fleet size.

What exactly was he doing with it?

he was hovering down into the trees on our property, into the yard itself. An overflight of the trees would be at ~120' or so, he came in over the trees and let down to 40'. Wife was not pleased.
The other neighbors yard is much more open and accessible, and he was buzzing around in it at ~10'.

So he was near VND (vertical neighbor destroy) LOL. It's just a matter of time before they wind up getting banned and what a shame because a quad carrying a Go-Pro can capture so much stuff inaccessible otherwise.

• Fly home automically if it loses com with the controller
• Fly home if the battery voltage drops to low
• Hold postion in the wind

Mine has a top speed of 20-25mph and a listed range of 300m/1000ft. However that range is excessively conservative. On YouTube you can find folks who've taken them up over 2000ft or miles away. It also can carry a GoPro.

With the appropriate add-ons you can do first person view flying out of linear sight.

So I consider it a Drone platform. It has autonomous, semi-autonomous, and beyond visual sight capabilities just like military drones. They really aren't toys.

That's one of the cool models. Definitely what I would call a "drone." The overwhelming majority of these things being called "drones" are just toys.
