An unmanned drone came within 200 feet of a commercial jet over New York, triggering an FBI appeal to the public for any information about the unusual and potentially dangerous incident.


The crew of Alitalia Flight 608 approaching John F. Kennedy airport on Monday reported the sighting.

The FBI expanded on the FAA report, saying in a statement that the Alitalia flight from Rome was roughly three miles from runway 31R when the incident occurred at an altitude of approximately 1,750 feet.

The unmanned aircraft, described by the FBI as black and no more than three feet wide with four propellers, came within 200 feet of the Boeing jetliner.

The FBI is asking anyone with information about the unmanned aircraft or the operator to contact us," said Special Agent in Charge John Giacalone.

A drone over Brooklyn was spotted by a pilot. The drone was reported by an Alitalia pilot as he was flying in to JFK airport. He quickly called radio control to report what he saw.


"We saw a drone, a drone aircraft," the pilot can be heard telling controllers. According to the report, the unmanned or remote-control aircraft was spotted about five miles west of the airport in New York. The Alitalia flight was able to land safely despite the other aircraft being close by.


A drone over Brooklyn or any area where planes fly could cause a disaster. They could easily get sucked in to the engines of these bigger planes or they could collide with the aircraft in mid-air.


For recreational hobbyists, flying remote-controlled planes is only allowed by the FAA up to 400 feet in the air, and within sight of the operator.

The alleged drone over Brooklyn was about 1,500 feet in the air. The FAA has launched an investigation.

Drones are getting cheaper and cheaper; pretty soon, it will be feasible for anyone to have one. I resarched drones a little over ten years ago, and revisited it last year. The drone proliferation was astounding. Every country can get militarized drones. Many are making their own. And it's only going to get more common.

It's going to be an interesting new issue.
 
The FAA is investigating...can we hold off on the doom and gloom until we know it's not someone flying a homemade drone illegally? Sure - there's air space rules for a reason, but let's not jump the gun.

How long you think for an aircraft like Airbus A330(I belive it was) would take to fly 5 miles?

And coming to a landing to JFK over the Brooklyn, aircraft could have been @ 1500-2000 feet...if not lower...

It's not about a canadian geese....

landing speed is what 200-300 mph? so thats at least a minute or so.

And what about when it's in a drop zone and a skydiver can't see it in time to avoid it? What about at night when a plane not equipped with radar "stumbles" on a drone? It's absolutely a problem and it's why the FAA has regulations around this.
 
yeah what happens when you build a drone with a micro processor say a credit card size raspberry pi or just an android phone with a custom app connected to the net and 10 megapixel camera with 30x optical zoom lens that can stay in the air for 48++ hours with enough fire power to kill a 20x20' square area ... Basically a fling kite with a few grenades stealth electric motors / solar to recharge the batts and very aerodynamic to stay in the air for days searching / hunting for a face ... when it finds it ... it swoops in "KABOOM" for the kill. Will be a whole new interesting field. Won't even need a human operator... A silent killer ... Just upload a few photos of your target/GPS work or Home address, send a few of them up and game over... Just wait for the loud bang...

I mean really...... How hard would it be to make one? With todays tech you could probably do it in a few months ... High profile people should probably be worried as tech keeps getting smaller and more efficient.

I somehow think this was a remote control plane that went off course rather than a drone. Maybe it was sucked up into an updraft and that's why it was flying at that altitude.

Possibly. It's kinda hard to see a 3' remote controlled plane at 1,750 feet.
 
Obviously drones are too dangerous for the public to own and operate. The government needs to do something to get them out of the wrong hands and keep them exclusively in the hands of the police and the military.

Ya, this. Always going to be evil hands at work, ensuring destructive forces remain out of those hands becomes more and more difficult as technology progresses. Not really an easy solution for a country with a growing lack of patriotism, morals, and opportunity.

When I started flying Spads and Quads I had to do an AMA read and sign to get insurance. They recommended not being within 5 miles of an airport or notify them if you were closer. Legally I think it's 3 miles.
