droid X vs bionic

i currently have a 5 yr old sony phone w810i. i think i need to hop onto verizon and get unlimited data before they go tiered.

i do not have 4g where i live, i doubt it will be out here anytime soon either.
the droid x is free at dell and amazon, i'd be switching over from att since my contract
is month to month right now. i don't really like the iphone as the screen is so small, but it does have a better touch response than the droids from playing around with it, plus its 200 on top of the monthly.

is there another phone out better at this time?(considering the X is free)
should i wait for the bionic? or will apps take 6mos or longer to be coded for dual core cpus ?

i looked into staying with att but the atrix felt really sluggish

First, the Atrix is pretty much the same as the Bionic. Second, any new phone that comes out is going to be 200-250 for a few months.

The best phone you can buy today on Verizon is the Thunderbolt, but if your not in a 4g area you might want to save your money and get the X.

Unfortunately the touch response on the droids can be attributed to stinkin' motoblur. As as I understand it, the bootloader on the X still hasn't been cracked. I have my suspicions that the Bionic won't be any different.

Go with an HTC handset and go to town with the custom ROMs. Personally, I would get the best phone available and right now I do believe the Thunderbolt fits the bill just fine.

bionic supposedly is coming out mid april? probably ~200 also hmm

i looked up the thunderbolt, looks like battery life is pretty harsh on it
and it's ~180 or so.

edit: nm looks like you can force 3g and that extends the battery life

The bionic is just the atrix with half the ram. I'm guessing by the time dual core is a good feature 512 is going to be too little ram.

I'm really digging my thunderbolt for what it's worth (don't have 4g here either). I was waiting for the bionic, but my phone started crapping out and the TB was just released so I went with it, and ended up quite happy. Although considering I went from a 6800 HTC to it any modern smart phone probably would have made me happy ^.^

The problem with any Moto phone is that you'll eventually be sad that you can't get into the latter half of Android fun: custom kernels and stuff. Sony too, but no one cares. HTC is going the same way, but the current models have all been cracked. LG and Samsung haven't been locking so far.

Incidentally, the Atrix is actually super-fast hardware wise. Just replace the launcher with LP or ADW and you'll be amazed. If you get good reception on AT&T and aren't in a 2011 Verizon LTE market, you might consider staying, because Verizon 3G is slow. I wouldn't actually get the Atrix, though, because of its strict lockdown.

I think it's rather silly to consider any Samsung phone out right now(and probably for the rest of the year) over an Atrix, especially the Captivate(the worst Galaxy S phone).

As mentioned above, the Droid Bionic is going to be little more than a Verizon version of the Atrix. The Droid X is slower than the Bionic. I would suggest a Thunderbolt over everything else at the moment.

The Captivate doesn't have FFC or flash, but it does have a pile of custom ROMs including CM7. It also has a better screen. I did edit out the recommendation, though, because it's going to be superseded in a week or two by the Infuse. (HSPA+, FFC, and 4.5" (!!!) Super AMOLED plus.) I'd also forgotten the Inspire exists.

This reminds me, though,

Faster for sure, but the Atrix screen, while qHD, is pentile. If this is also true of the larger 4.3" Bionic qHD screen, it won't have much of a sharpness advantage over regular WVGA.

Reviews of the Axtrix haven't exactly been scathing. While there's still room for improvement (there's ALWAYS room for improvement), one screen being WVGA and the other being qHD, the qHD will be considerably superior. 4.3" screens are just a little too big for WVGA.

Thunderbolt if you want 4G, rootability, ROMs, or half the enjoyment of Android. If you don't need/want any of that, then by all means the X is a good phone. Just remember it's last gen stuff.

Oh, and the Bionic/Atrix are good hardware wise, but being locked down ruins it for me. I want the ability to root and use custom ROMs if I want.

A point I read about the Atrix today while researching: yes, the Atrix has 1GB RAM. But apparently half is dedicated to the Webtop desktop OS and half to Android. So, it's not like you have 1GB total in each OS.

Unless someone has data to the contrary?

I know this doesn't directly solve the TB 4G battery issue, but if you keep the wifi connected, the battery lasts all day.
