Droid USB tethering is free?

I'm using my droid now connected by USB to tether and use it's connection.. but I notice on certain sites like gmail I'm redirected to a VZW page asking me to pay $20 a month and sign/click the agreement for it. What's the deal? They let you try it out to see how it works?

Root your droid and use wireless tether for root users.

or buy pdanet (free trial anyway for a couple weeks and then it restricts https sites I believe) and use that for wired tether.

Rooting is so easy there's no reason not to do it for free tethering

I notice http sites are already working fine with the Droid USB tethering with no modifications at all. It only redirects me to a VZW page anytime I try to go to HTTPS
