Not an in-depth review but I've had one for about 3 weeks now and I love it. Super fast, great screen, great radio, great build quality. Battery life stomps any other smartphone by far. Only downside is that it hasn't gotten jelly bean yet. Supposedly its in soak testing right now so only a couple more weeks hopefully.

Yup it'd be almost a perfect phone if it wasn't for the software.

You could say that about several high-end Android phones. In fact, almost all of them. If I could get the DROID DNA without Sense and T-Mobile LTE bands, I would be all over that in a second. But Verizon and skins completely ruin the phone for me.

You would think they should, but if they do they will have to run battery tests on it which would blemish their deity so it may not happen unfortunately.

I don't know what this means.

I would love to see extensive battery tests done on the MAXX and non-MAXX. I want to see what improvement the non-MAXX has compared to last years versions. They don't have to do a complete review. The S4 1.5 has been reviewed to death.

tldr is the Razr Maxx HD has the best battery life of any smartphone in history and the normal Razr HD has the 2nd best. They both kill the iphone 5 and GS3 in battery life.

That looks like one awesome phone! Especially the battery - it would probably last me 4-5 days (my iPhone 4S lasts max 2 days). I'd really like to see an in-depth review at AT :)

I've had mine for a little over 2 weeks now. Solid phone, even with the downgrade to ICS. But, I hate to rain on your parade, it will NOT get 4-5 days of battery life unless you leave it on WiFi and never turn the screen on. I usually pull ~36hrs out of it, but I hit it heavily during the day time.

He's saying Anandtech has a pro-Iphone bias. Which is basically true.

So he's saying they don't want to do a RAZR HD MAXX review because it will make the iPhone 5 look bad?

But they did a RAZR MAXX review. It beat the iPhone 4S. I think anyone that reads this site probably knows and understands that the MAXX series have humongous batteries. The results won't be a surprise to anyone, it would just be nice to have actual, reliable numbers. I haven't found any other site that has done as extensive a battery test as AT normally does.

I have already made it *very* clear, but I guess I need to do it again-

There is no conspiracy
There is no conspiracy
There is no conspiracy
There is no conspiracy

The people handling the mobile reviews at AnandTech are just extremely die hard iOS fans. It has nothing to do with thinking in any way imaginable it has anything to do with kickbacks or payoffs or even pressure of the normal sort. The reviewers at AT just don't have a *clue* what using an Android device is about *at all* and their reviews revolve *entirely* around what it would be like if it were an iOS device.

Again, since you clearly missed it last time

There is no conspiracy
There is no conspiracy
There is no conspiracy
There is no conspiracy

AT removed every single CPU bench and replaced them all with browser benchmarks once Apple made huge improvements to their browser engine. Coincidence?

AT never cared about PPI until Apple came out with a retina display. Coincidence?

Every time AT has looked at a high end game on top tier Android devices and iOS devices the Android device has had a slight framerate disadvantage while having superior graphics, yet AT only *ever* shows the one bench that makes iOS devices look like they have a stellar GPU. Coincidence?

The Nexus 4 added a *major* new feature for gaming, the ability to enable AA on games that don't have it built in natively. This is a *massive* feature in terms of improved functionality- it managed a foot note and not a single test. Apple announces they have improved the color calibration on their devices and now *every single* device that hits the labs gets a full page test to check for calibration versus the standard that Apple has decided to use- which, oh my, happens to be the exact same one AT decided to use. Coincidence?

I could keep going. It has *nothing* to do with conspiracy. It is just a factual issue. AT is rabidly pro iOS devices and it shows in *everything* they do when discussing mobile technology. It has *nothing* to do with anything approaching a conspiracy.

So... no chance for an in-depth review, eh?

The article said they're getting 24 hours of use, compared to 8 hours on their iPhone 4. That's 3x as much... so if I get up to two days of use of my iPhone 4S (has a worse battery life than the 4), would I really not be able to get 4-5 out of the Motorola one?

Also, what's the SoC inside this one? The article I found does not mention it.

You might be able to get 4-5 days if your usage is very low. I have been routinely charging every 3rd night with my Maxx HD. This is with turning off all data for 7-8 hours while I am sleeping on the nights i'm not charging and then low/moderate usage during the day.

Thanks! That sounds good to me!

Now I wonder when it will show up in Europe... If at all.

Goddamn I enjoyed that more that I thought I would.

AT bench will show the MAXX worst-case scenario. All AMOLED phones get (relatively) hosed on the tests because the screen settings are based on a fixed brightness (basically max for AMOLED) instead of any legibility measure that accounts for the massive contrast advantage of LED.

Well then - where can I read a solid review of this phone?

The phone is now being updated to 4.1.

BTW, my carrier Fido just got this phone (Razr HD, not the MAXX) with a killer cheap plan.

I ordered the Nexus 4, but I'd consider taking the above if I can somehow wiggle out my current contract cheaply. 2 GB is not ideal (esp. since I currently have 6 GB), but considering it's cheaper than my current retentions plan, and the phone is free, I'd take it.

[ Update ]

I just ordered this phone.

i agree with some of your points, but have you ever heard brian klug on the podcasts? i'd say he's more of an android fan than an iphone fan, by far.

So, the Razr HD is now on order. I thinking of cancelling my Nexus 4 order now.

I got the MAXX HD for $149 last week and I am very impressed. Top notch build quality and battery lasts forever. I put the JB leak the day I got it and now I am on the OTA JB leak and it's a totally different phone compared to ICS. Also call quality and reception is a lot better than all the HTC and Samsung phones I have used including the iphone. Motorola uses their own custom radios right?
