Perhaps it's a dumb question, but is the first party motorola dock an induction charger, or does it just hold your phone and you plug in the USB as normal?

Holds the phone. Dock as a USB adapter thing.

I'm jealous of the induction charging on my wife's Pixi Plus.

I guess the induction charging is cool in the "wow, they can do that" sense, but is it really an improvement over a docking station that uses a plug? The docking station will charge faster and be cheaper.

Thanks guys - I just assumed that, because of a lock of an ipod like dock port, that (without induction charging) there would be a cable mess with the dock, but I didn't realize it had a micro-usb jack integrated. Cool!

I like the "wow, they can do that" factor. :)

I think it's pretty cool that you just sort of lay it on there and let the magnets catch hold.

Though, the Droid dock is pretty solid IMO.

I have LOVED it on my Pre. I wish EVERYTHING was like this. I can just drop the phone down, or take it. The normal docks with ports you still have to line up, and while it doesn't take long, it is an annoyance when you are back and forth to your desk a lot.

But while I find it quite valuable, in the end, it's a nice luxury. I don't see this getting big unless some standard comes out. At that point, we might as well be getting wireless power pushed through instead. Just keep the magnetic bases, it makes for a nice holding space for the phone =)
