DROBO $450 - Robotic Storage Array Enclosure

I've had my eye on this little unit for awhile. It "kinda" works like a RAID, given that you have data protection. One drive can fail and you still have all your filez. However, it lets you mix and match different size internal SATA drives and still utilize all that storage, unlike traditional RAID. I guess you can think of it as a dynamic RAID, if you will.

B&H Photo-Video offers the Data Robotics drobo 4-Bay 3.5" SATA to USB 2.0 External Hard Drive Enclosure, model no. 90000002002, for $449.95. With about $17 for shipping, it's the lowest total price we could find by a buck. This enclosure supports up to four Serial ATA hard drives. It allows you to mix and match hard drive capacities while keeping data safe, even if a drive fails or capacity is upgraded.

And that's one of the good reviews. I checked these things out when they first came to market. It looked so promising....

But this is the cheapest price I've seen!

Thats a bit to expensive for my liking.

I would just buy a enclosure that can hold 4 drives.

The entire reason it's more expensive than an enclosure that houses 4 drives is that it handles all your data redundancy for you and allows you to expand the array.

PCMag gave it a pretty good reveiw. This is (and has been) on my watch list of items I would like to purchase.
