I can't play my copy of Prince of Persia: Two Thrones because the Starforce DRM is incompatible with Windows 7. I only found out when I restarted my PC and it had to repair itself for it to boot. :|

To top it off Ubisoft knows this, but won't release a patch to correct it. I now have to get a crack of some sort to play a game I purchased.

Ubisoft and EA. If you buy you forfeit right to complain, because it's not like it's a surprise at this point.

Just curious, have you contacted their CSRs? I'd be curious to see what they had to say . . . especially when you tell them you're about to head to Pirate Bay to get a working copy of the game you paid for.

I've been Googling the hell out of this.

Quote from StarForce:
Protection versions below 5.5 do not support Windows 7.
Users of products that protected with 3.x/4.x/5.0 versions should contact the protected program developers or publishers to obtain Windows 7 patches, or use previous Windows version to run the products.

StarForce offers FREE re-protection for all the developers and publishers of the programs that utilize version below 5.50 to release the appropriate patches. Please contact your sales manager for re-protection and further details.*
It seems Prince of Persia Two Thrones uses version 3.

Also on Ubisoft's website under "Games Compatible with Windows 7"
  • Prince of Persia (2008)
  • Prince of Persia: Sands of Time
  • Prince of Persia: Warrior Within
Sands of Time and Warrior Within are compatible with Windows 7 but not the last game in the trilogy?

FUCK UBISOFT! :mad::mad::mad:

As much as it isn't a great solution, the game just started up on Steam for me with no problem. :|

EDIT:

Note that I tried both Two Thrones and Forgotten Sands.

If you're gamer you gotta have an old machine around anymore.

It sucks, but it's true. I still have all of my old OS's (Windows 98, 98ME, XP) in a safe place.

I'll have to buy the game from steam. I'm not giving Ubisoft anymore money.

I bought Two Thrones six years ago. Ubisoft wasn't bad back then, right?

I don't have an old machine. However, I do have Windows 98 SE, 2000 Pro, and XP discs. :)

Don't buy it from Steam, you legally own the game but there is a problem. Using a crack to replace it while not wholey legal is morally justified if support wont help you get it working. If you ever ended up in court on this one I think it unlikely you would loose.

UbiSoft become progressively more evil as it went big into average console games. Their perception was that piracy was much lower and hence the PC was the problem. Their words at least suggest they are coming around to stop the madness but I for one no longer to bother to see what the DRM scheme is, I see ubisoft on the review and I never speak of the game again. Will take a long time before their reputation is repaired.

Why do you think that buying the game from Steam will not give Ubisoft any of your money?? I am very confused by this.

I can play the game now.

It's a bit of a workaround, but if you double click the "princeofpersia.exe" then double click the "pop3.exe" the game runs. The funny thing is I can play the game but I haven't put in my key as yet. :hmm:

Not always, Steam as DRM is fine.

Mostly, but not completely.

I find it BS I can't log onto my steam account simultaneously from multiple computers. As long as it doesn't let me run the same game twice why not?

If I buy the games from gog or retail I can legitimately let someone else play a legal installed copy of game A on one computer while I play game B on a second computer.

If I bought the same games on steam I can't- unless I have a different steam account for each game, which would be inconvenient to the max.
