My family always joked that my mom has a lead foot. Well now that I'm 17 I have my license and have been driving around for a good year now without her. So I get in the car with her for the first time since before I got my license and holy ****** she drives fast. I find myself doing the parent thing pushing down with my right foot in the passenger seat.

I just found it funny that I had never noticed it until now. Have any of you guys ever experienced something like this? Realizing how bad your parents are at driving is pretty scary, especially since my mom commutes to work everyday.

I went through the exact same thing with my mother and sister, and for a while my mother with me until I toned down my driving style. I basically just had to suck it up until I moved out.

10 over the limit, which isn't too horrible but its more along the lines of accelerating very fast and braking late and very hard.

I find I have the same problem. I should mention I've never driven a car, only motorcycles. However, Last night my mom ran over a glass bottle as she was driving me home, she says "what was that", I said "A glass bottle". I saw it from 100 feet but she still ran over it. She hits ever pothole or any bump in the road.

Her excuse was "Oh I was looking too far ahead", and "Maybe because you drive motorcycles you watch the road better". My answer was she sucks at driving.

EDIT: And yes my mother has the accelerate too quick and break too late problem also.

IIRC it was my mother who taught me how to do drifts when I was learning....sure it was unintentional (wet weather and too much throttle while cornering one day) but it sure did inspire me.

I really hate my Father's driving, it's been 10 years since I got my licence and even now his car control...or lack there of, still scares the crap out of me.

oddly its not my mom that tells me to slow down, rather my dad. Freaks out when I accelerate even at a medium pace. I don't worry about it much. My mom never really says anything, guess she trusts me more. I think she realises I'm a better driver than her.

Main things that annoy me with my mom driving are: holding the brake for to long, or braking when its no longer necessary. not watching the speedo and thus not always alert to how fast shes going. Holding the wheel wrong. Not terrible, but I just havent figured out a good way to correct her yet.

You'll get use to it. Now when you marry a woman that has no depth perception you will know fear.

Ah yes, I remember when I experienced it. Before I got my license, I had been driving with my mom for so many years, that I was just accustomed to her driving style. Then after I started driving on my own and got in the car with my mom, I realized how crazy her driving really was. :p

++

My mom, sister, and ex all do this.

My dad speeds quite a bit, but is a very safe driver. I feel very comfortable driving with him, but I am always a little on edge when my mom is driving.

My mom picked me up at the airport last night and almost killed me. She was making a left on a yellow turn arrow, started braking in the middle of the manuever and the oncoming cars started accelerating. You don't realize how bad some drivers are until they put your life at jeopardy.

Yeah 10 over the limit isn't bad... when you have more experience driving it'll feel normal. Accelerating fast is a waste of gas, but sometimes you gotta do it so you don't get stuck behind a slowpoke. Braking late and hard - your mom is a bad driver.

My wife does the same thing (stopping late and hard), she often ends up way too close to the car in front of her. Freaks me out every time, because one time it was raining and the ban behind us DIDN'T stop. Our car was squashed between a cargo van and a Dodge Ram.

No... he's saying he pushes down as if he had a brake pedal on his side.

Yea my mom brakes wayyy too late. I swear to god I feel like I'm gonna die everytime I get in the car. Never realized this until I got my license. All just really oblivious to stuff on the road.

Aye my father's driving is frustrating too. But it is pretty much the opposite of my mom's. He is in the right line the whole time, he believes the left lane exists only for passing. Drives very slow. He isn't very good at multitasking while driving, he can't handle being on the cell phone or having someone giving him directions, has to pull over and break out the map. Safer but slightly annoying.

Luckily my gf doesn't suffer from this - she's a very good driver. My Mom suffers from this "brake/accel too much" thing, but I'm not scared in the car with her.

eh... my mom drives too damn slow.

she's the type who will go 55 mph on the highway when the limit is 60. And she has the mindset that she wants to see everyone else get a speeding ticket, and she constantly makes a big deal about every little minor thing.
