Driving your car via joystick instead of steering wheel

Drive by wire

"It has been suggested that drive-by-wire might allow a car to become completely separate from its controls, meaning that a car of the future might theoretically be controlled by any number of different control systems: push buttons, joysticks, steering wheels, or even voice commands ? whatever device that designers could come up with. "

ah.. common items now matching video games.

if you had the option would you take a joystick or even buttons instead of a steering wheel?

I can't possibly think of anything that would be more logical than a steering wheel. Anything else would just seem confusing.

They've been talking about this since the 80s I think.

I'd think you'd lose alot in terms of force feedback though. Unless they were able to provide competent force feedback through the joystick.

I'd assume that a car advanced enough to have drive by wire would be able to tell better than the driver the grip conditions of each tire and be able to decided the tightest and fastest controllable turn possible . . . .

Short of that, haptics have come a long way.

I'd still take a wheel, though. It's hard as hell to play racing games with a joystick.

My car is DBW...i guess I could rig it up to a joystick for throttle. Right now, though, I don't know of any cars that uses eletronic steering (rather than hydraulic power steering assist), so the steering part wouldn't really work

I think they have been talking about this for a while. I think I would prefer the steering wheel for a few reasons. One, I think you would get better driver feedback, secondly would the joystick be between your legs or off to the side? If it is only on one side that means you could get tired of "steering" if you could use only one hand. With a steering wheel you can always be moving your hands around and changing positions which is quite nice if you have a long drive. Finally I think it would really foul up a lot of drivers. People seem to have driving issues as it is, put in a new device and then that is almost asking for more problems.
