Driving to Lake Tahoe in the winter

I usually drive my trusty Camry with chains to Tahoe, but I plan to borrow a friend's SUV with 4WD. He doesn't have snow tires or chains. I forgot how the road requirements went... was it something like this:

level 1: 4wd and cars w/ chains
level 2: 4wd w/ snow tires and cars w/ chains
level 3: chains required on all vehicles

where level 3 is when the road is the iciest.

Does anyone know?

I'm betting it will be level1 this weekend, but you never know!
