Driving to Florida tomorrow

jlee

Lifer
I scored an all-expenses-paid drive down and airfare back up, ferrying a car down for someone up here. I'm hoping to leave around noon tomorrow...stop in VA for the night and make it to Orlando by 9pm-ish Sunday evening. Works out great for me because I have friends & family down there..

So, since I'm working 3rd shift tonight, I don't want to trust myself not to forget anything. 😛

Cell phone and charger
Wallet
GPS
Sunglasses
Clothes
Bathroom stuff
MP3 player/car thing
Cameras & chargers
Gun (with hard case and two locks for the flight home)
Flashlight & charger

What else?

I thought about getting a satellite radio setup, but I hate buying stuff like that without finding a deal..and I can't find any deals at the moment.

working all night then driving from NH to VA... 750mi... hmm.

Imma go with caffeine pills.

I get off at 7am, but we have enough guys on that I should be able to head home at 4. Plenty of time for a nap. 608 miles to Richmond from here.

Buy the sat radio.

My choices are Best Buy, Radio Shack and Wal-Mart. Recommendations?

I have no recommendation. I have not been in the market, but I took a trip to Florida (from NJ) and we played the heck out of the CD player (got old, fast). I definitely do not want to take that trip again.

a sat radio would be nice. That route is going to put you through some boring and somewhat isolated parts, which gets tiring to drive after awhile. While music is nice 12hrs of it is too much and would probably tire you more. I find that something interesting on talk radio is a far better way to past the time. If you read you may want to consider getting a book on CD type deal and put that on your mp3 player.

Also you may want to plan not to make the whole thing in 2 days. Depending on what car you're driving it may not be comfortable enough to drive for that long at a time.

I've been back and forth a few times- it's definitely a long ride. Good point on 12 hours of music, though..I might have to take a swing through a store or two and see what they have on hand.

whats the gun for?

Insurance. I'm trained and qualified..won't do me much good if I leave it home!

Also a radar detector if you want to make some good time through states other than VA(illegal if you get caught).

Back in the late 80s me and 4 friends drove to FL from NYC in 19 hours. Yes, we were speeding and only stopped for gas but we loaded the trunk with tons of carbs and all took turns driving. We did not stop for sleep.

ummm.... well....

you want to tell him OP?

I suppose- here's my workmobile. 😛

I'll be in a Buick Lucerne, though..hopefully I won't attract too much attention anyway. 🙂

Caffeine would be my #1 thing.

Satellite Radio is a definite as well. I love my XM Radio because I like hockey and they have all the NHL Play by Play on there. Sirius is good as well. Just get one of them, you won't be disappointed.

Another thing that might be nice are some "books on CD". Maybe you could convert them to MP3 and put them on an Ipod or something.

That's nothing. A friend and I drove from WI down south through TX to CA and then back around through UT and back to WI. It took us 5 days (4,000 miles) and we stopped in Las Vegas for 1 full day. That was crazy fun.

I'd love to drive from here out to Cali and back..make a big loop around the country. One of these days.. 🙂

well that doesn't change much. More of a pain to get stopped in the first place.

Last time we took a trip from NJ to FL I went to Radio Shack and bought a CB Radio, external antenna, etc. It was fun listening to truckrs on 95, and sometimes even interacting with them. Also they alert to speed traps/cops very often too.

Returned all the equipment on our return too ... I know unethical, but we were alot younger back then and didnt know better.
