driving to college on a donut. Is this safe?

I had a blow out just yesterday, so now I'm riding w/ a donut. The donut is on passanger/back tire. So is this safe for now? I need to go to college tomorrow which is 60 miles (30 up, 30 back). I'm also taking the back roads because it's recommended that I do under 50 miles. I had to go to school today and I was doing about 60 mph and everything seemed fine.

MY parents are going to pay for the new tire and they want to do this tomorrow, but I can't because I have a big exam. I need to prepare for it and I don't have the time to get tires.

So I'm thinking about waiting till Saturday morning. I have to go to college on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Can I make it until Saturday? Is this safe? I'm not going to be flying down the road and I'm actually taking the back roads so I can travel at a lesser speed.

Anyone?

I drove from Sacramento to Fremont, CA on a donut, which is about 105 miles. Took forever, but I made it!

as long as it's from dunkin' donuts you should be fine, as they are harder than rubber

Yea, but that's just one time. I need to do this 3 more times. I'm also worried because a storm is suspossed to move into NJ at the end of the week. I do not want to drive in bad weather w/ a frekin donut. Oh, and if it snows well then... I'm probably going to die.

Rent a car. Borrow your parent's car. Have a friend take you. You are asking if it is safe to put over 180 miles on a donut which is assinine. However, no matter what advice we provide you have already made up your mind and will do it. Good luck to you.

Yea, that's a lot of miles on a donut. Hmm... I wish I had more time. And my parents will not let me use their car. They have a brand new Pathfinder and they are afraid I'm going to wreck it.

Also, I don't have the cash to rent a car. I wish I did though...

i've driven on a donut for two weeks before... about 60 miles worth of commute each day... doing about 60mph. however, i am not endorsing u to follow my actions. if u can... get a new tire ASAP.

If your car is Front drive, put the donut in the rear. Most of the load, friction, stress is on front wheels.

Even when I used a full-size spare the handling went really down in my car, i can only imagine how bad it will be with a donut. At least make sure its got the proper jelley pressure.

Bad idea. First of all, the tread on the space-saver isn't good enough for normal use. Also, the 50 mile thing is more of an "at a stretch" thing, space-saver tires aren't built to be run for sustained periods of time. Also, if it is on the drive axle, then you will be wearing your differential since the wheels will be rotating at different speeds for the whole trip. Not only that, but the car's load carrying capacity will decrease a lot too.

Instead of starting this thread, you should have been out getting it replaced. Many tire dealers are still open.

As has been stated, put that donut on the non-drive wheels. IE, if your car is FWD, stick it on the back. RWD, stick it on the front. AWD, don't drive it. At least I wouldn't.

The donut spares are rated at up to 50 MPH, so don't speed on it. I find it very hard to believe that they are only supposed to last for 50 miles though - I think many on here are misinformed :). I would think you'd be fine for a week or two on it. If you had to (note that I don't condone these actions) you could probably drive on it for quite a while without incident.

In the cold weather like we are having it should be fine... less likely to have a blow out. Just keep the speeds down and the braking slow. Reduce the wear and extend the life. I drove 225 miles on one back and forth to college one time, takes awhile for 34in tires to be delivered. Good luck.. you should be fine, just drive safe.
