Reminder of Safe Driving Tips for Those Traveling During Winter Weather
N.Y., Dec. 9, 2009 — Some important tips for safe winter driving include:

o Never follow a snow plow too closely or attempt to pass one. Remember that the highway ahead of the plow is usually snow covered;
o Adjust speed for road conditions and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles;
o Schedule extra time for winter travel and be patient during snow and ice removal operations;
o Assume that bridge surfaces are slippery, as they freeze more quickly than road surfaces;
o Never venture from your vehicle if snowbound;
o Equip your car with emergency supplies including sand, shovel, flares, booster cables, rope, ice scraper, portable radio, flashlight, blanket and extra warm clothes;
o Inform a responsible person of your destination, intended route, and estimated time of arrival; and
o Keep calm and do not panic in case of a vehicle breakdown, accident, or if you become snowbound.

The woman who cut me off and ended up driving into oncoming traffic earlier today probably should have followed these.

Although it was hilarious to see her get T-Boned by a Jeep so I'm pretty ok with it.

The scariest snow/ice drive I've ever been on was from Banff to Jasper in October a few years back.......

There were no railings on the roads, and fairly steep inclines at times. My (then) wife and I had a front wheel-drive Aurora with all-season tires on it. The roads were completely snow-covered. If you braked too much, the car would slide if you were going downhill... but also, you couldn't really stop the forward momentum of the car! So it made for some scary moments, and I'm a pretty capable winter driver.

Actually... now that I think about it....... Edmonton to Calgary in the middle of a blizzard was sheer hell. Transports whipping by me at 110/km and for the life of me I could not get that Aurora over 60km without feeling like we were going to end up in the snowbanks. AHHHHHHH memories.

I love how people go through this same shit every year for the first few days before figuring out how not to be a fucking idiot on ice/snow.

yeah. this morning, traffic was 20km/h slower than normal because the words "snow" and "ice" were mentioned. the roads were just wet. ridiculous.

Today had surprisingly little traffic in the AM for me in Lake County IL, I got to work early!!! Snow is coming down, but it's been pretty slow, with minimal wind. only like 2-3 inches on the ground in Deerfield still ....

I think people are playin hookey.

Anyhow, I pass plows whenever I have a chance as long as there isn't a red light coming up soon. They drive too slow, and I don't have any problems driving in a bit of snow. Now, if there's like 10 inches on the ground, I might just hang back and follow the plow, but passing a plow is situational, not a "never" thing IMO....

You wouldn't believe the number of retards that see the road behind a plow truck (the truck just plowed and sanded) and think it looks like that in front of the truck.
IF they get around you and they will kill themselves trying, they end up crashing because the snow is two foot deep in front of the truck.

Everyone in NH forgot how to drive in snow this morning. It was hideous out there, 20 min commute took 2 hours. The sides of the road looked like a fucking parking lot full of damage vehicles. I couldn't believe how many people ended up in the banks.

Passing snowplows is situational. 3 or 4 inches of snow on the ground in front of the plows? Plows going 35 in a 65? I pass them. I can easily do 45-50. Now, if it's icy roads that they're salting... then I hang a couple hundred yards back to give the salt a little time to start doing its thing.

Seems like they handed out this brochure in MI:

It's dark! oh noes drive 30mph slower for no reason.
Tailgating is awesome.
Get next to the car trying to merge onto the expressway, match their speed.
Get to a stop light? Turn brain off for 30 seconds. Pay no attention to your turn arrow or the cars horns behind you.
Keep 35 car lengths ahead of you. If a car merges into your lane 30 lengths ahead slam on your brakes.
I could go on and on....

Last winter when I worked at the bar I'd get off at like 3am. Screw my well being, I passed the plows up every night and got honked at.
