I was driving my dads car today and it has been awhile since I drove it and I kept rolling back on the damm thing on hills.I have only been driving stick for 5 months but it has been 3 months since the last time I did. I was in traffic and people decided to park inches from my bumper and I was worried about rolling into them and I couldn get it going with out some roll. Reallt imbarrising. For the rest of the car ride I was bitching about how I never do that on my bike and it was the cars fault :) I hate rolling back and stalling it in traffic.

the roll is annoying. i often wonder whose fault it would be if someone got right behind you on a hill and you bumped rolling back. probably yours even though the jerk was 4 inches off your bumper.

I like to stay in 1st gear and not use the brake at all. Try to balance the clutch so the car doesn't go forward or roll back. Then when the light changes, just give some gas and let the clutch out.

It would be my fault for not being incontrol of the veichle. I have to get this perfect for when I take my driving test.

i guess thats sorta like when you've got both feet off an automatic and you're not going anywhere on the hill.

that'll burn your clutch, and yeah if you roll into them it's your fault because your supposed to be in control of your vehicle and it shouldn't be rolling backwards..bla bla gay laws

In Mississippi, it's the fault of the person behind you. Unless you just start cruising backwards.

The catch is that there are no hills in Mississippi.... ;)

Bad for the clutch. It's much better to use the brake on a manual when you're stopped than trying to balance the car's weight on the clutch.

I don't do that too often, but once in a while. Thanks for letting me know, BTW.

I usually go into neutral at stop lights and just hold the e break. When the light is red for both sides I shift into first and just get ready to take off but there I had too much to think about at one time and just forgot about the ebreak, good thing my dad grabbed it for me.

extremely bad for the clutch, but its a great way to learn where the spot is :)

I have been driving a bike for way too long and I just keep forgetting stuff in the car. Much easier to control the clutch with your hand. I have a good idea where the "spot" is on my dads car but I am used to the spot on the bike so I am almost always getting to the point of stalling it in my dads car then I push the clutch back in.. Sigh I will get this sonner or later.

Actually it would be the fault of the guy behind you. According to the law here you should stop a car length away from the car in front of you. Also when it is a really steep hill I have put on the parking brake before sticking it into gear and trying to drive off.

haha, why dont you try that then? i find it alot easier to do that when other traffic is behind me... i actually almost never use my brakes at a light unless there is a downhill grade in front of me.

if it's a bad hill, I'd use the hand brake, but you may not ahve one of them. Other than that, just go practice where you have to stop and start a lot and you'll learn the clutch.

This feels good but is VERY harmful to your car. This is what handbrakes are for (well, one thing, anyway!). It annoys me that some manufacturers are making cars with manual transmissions and a foot-actuated E-brake (a friend's Ford Ranger truck is like this), which makes the job tougher. In any case, this practice will lead to a quick death for your clutch, so I suggest you learn to use the handbrake instead.

Neither does my dad and everytime he doesnt roll back on a hill I am like "show off"

This is a perfect example of why Tom and Ray (of Car Talk fame) named their book "Why You Should Never Listen to Your Father When It Comes to Cars". Your dad is a clutch-burnin' fool, but that does not mean you should be one. Practice enough with your handbrake and you will not roll either, and, unlike your father, you will not prematurely roast your clutch.

Problem is with my S10, there is no handy E-Brake.

I've used the clutch/gas technique for years, never burned a clutch. My S10 has got 128K miles on it, the clutch is still as strong as ever. :D

Trick is to do it with as slow an RPM as you can without stalling. I can usually do it at idle. Granted, we don't have a lot of huge steep hills here either. :)

Depending on the foot pedal arrangement, on steep hills starting out, I've kept my right heel on the brake, tipped the right toes on the gas, find the "catch" spot on the clutch, then pop the foot off the brake when I'm ready to take off. It takes some practice though. :)

You need to set the handbrake when stopped on a hill. It prevents the car from rolling backwards, but allows forward motion. So, when its time to go, you just drive forward as normal. Once you have the forward motion, you release the handbrake.

In my old Ranger I always did the heel/toe thing on the brake/accelerator. Worked fine for me, but it does take a little practice.

Down by where I live, there is a stop light at the top of a hill that has to have a good 25 degree slope. I drove my zuk up that stupid hill every day for school, and it was annoying as hell. I used the brake, to stay,a nd gave a bunch of gas and let the cluch out pretty damn fast to get going up that hill without rolling down. Stalled it once or twice though :( I never rode the cutch, I just finsihed changing it out, and i am going to go easy on it for awhile now :D

Why are automatic transmissions 'so bad'.. I just got a Civic Si, in 4-Speed auto, and everyone is like.. "is it manual?.. wtf, why did you get automatic, automatic sucks"

I dont understand whats wrong with automatic..
