You know how they say to steer into a skid/slide?
you know that seems so very stupid the instant your skidding, but If i'd done that i might have hit into a bank head on but been able to back right out, instead, my right side got pulled up in and for like 20 ft or 3 car lengths it was skidding along the top then i got over enough and my left tire hit the curb and the right fell into the snow, , and i have bald tires on a 10 yr old car, so i was pretty stuck.

I was right around the corner from my office too. I gave them a call and the general manager and the heads of a few other depts. came and shoveled me out a bit, then the gen manager had some sort of sawdust filled traction thingys in his trunk; and he laid them under the tires (stupid front wheel drive) and it got out. . .
Any one else slid off the road in snowy conditions, and at that very instant thought, why the heck would I turn into it, but then later you think analytically and realize it mighta been better...
yeah im ok and so is car also, thanx! just a bit peeved, great way to start the week

That really sucks. You know now that you owe those guys lunch, right? LOL. You need to get some rogaine for those tires before that happens again.:D

I suggest you find an empty parking lot & work on some ice /snow skids & steering..

FWD has a different feel... & until you have been in the situation a few times what you want to do is wrong !!!

Control on snow ice is different than just wet because you do not get to 'feel' loss of traction & the 'break'..

The same principles apply, tho, so a little effort will reward you for the learning experience for a long time to come...

That sucks Ark, but do what cxim says. The only way to survive winter driving is to know how your own car handles under different conditions.

How often do you get a legit excuse to do donuts?? ;)

Ark... now I understand you problems with the girls...

You are skid challenged. You are supposed to be steering for the nook, but instead you aim for the cranny ..lol

If you have bald tires you are nothing but a dumbass. You are endangering everyone around you when you drive in conditions like that. You should have left the car there until you got new tires.

Ha ArkAoss my truck got into a skid as I was going into work after our first snow fall this year. I ended up on the front snow covered lawn of the company I work for. Felt like a compete idiot as it's a 4 X 4.

The next week I went out and got a set of winter tires. All seasons my ass.

I live in MN, so we see our share of snow, etc...It's kinda funny when you are driving along and see like 10 vehicles in the ditch..it's funny because 9 times outta 10 they are all 4WD vehicles...4WD gives you a false sense of security...

Also, take previous poster's suggestion and go to an empty parking lot(snow covered of course), Target, Kmart, etc after hours and do donuts for a while..

In MN, at least 10 years ago, we had to go out onto a frozen lake and prove we could recover from skids to pass driver's ed..

GEShields,

You had a good instructor. Ten years ago when I was in DE, my instructor didn't even take me on the freeway.

Sadly, I, like so many American children was left to learn how to drive on my own, and logged many snowy nights in empty parking lots. There?s just no substitute for the practice.

Good tires are a must. Different ?all-season? tires are hit and miss for winter driving, and I?m getting sick of missing half the time I buy tires. I?m finally going to shell out for a set of winter tires.
