BUT I like your rant much better 😀
Seriously, tailgating is either:
1)the result that some punk thinks I am not driving fast enough or
2)the result of lazy drivers using my bumper to regulate their speed

there is a very efffective hand gesture for this... its not the bird... simply hold your hand up open and and close your fingers into a fist, people get the idea really fast that they have a flasher on. 🙂

I will get over if I can. If I don't, it's because I'm just a safe distance behind the car in front of me and the tailgater behind me would be all of 30ft further down the road if I wasn't there. I will slow down and pace the car next to me if someone does that.
But, even worse, the other day heading into work along a 2-laner, I had some woman in a newer Maxima pull up on my bumper. I couldn't see her headlights nor half of her hood! I tapped the brakes and she backed off a bit and her male passenger threw his hands up like 'wtf'. Now, this is a very busy 2-laner and this is morning rush hour so there was all of 200-300' of space between me and the next car and we were approaching a traffic light (1/4 mile ahead). Finally, I'd had enough and I braked hard down to about 10mph (this is in a 'no-speed-limit-but-assumed-to-be-55mph' section). Then I speed up a bit to leave her behind and she gets all ticked and goes to pass me. Mind you, we're in a curved section of road that is marked No Passing (double-yellow lines) so I gun the engine but my car just won't keep a Maxima at bay and she whips in just in front of me and just BARELY in time to avoid a Chevy Blazer that had STOPPED in the oncoming lane. They both flick me the bird (the girl and her passenger) and zoom ahead.
We get to the traffic light (about 10 secs later) and I get behind her and honk the horn. They turn around and I start applauding. They flick me the bird and zoom off, turning right on red that's posted no turn on red.

Not if people would leave gaps between them and the car in front of them. That would allow for smoother merging.
Almost every single accident on the interstates during rush hour are the lemmings following too closely who can't stop in time when traffic comes to a halt and BAM! Multi-car fender bender. Morons. They deserve the higher insurance rates they're about to get!
There is only so much physical space in order to leave gaps. Depending on how much traffic there is, in order to leave enough gaps at the merge point cars in all lanes would have to slow down, which would create a wave of "slowing down" travelling backwards. Heck, some cars might even have to go in reverse to leave a big enough gap 😉

Would it be so hard to install a little compartment near the back bumper that, with a push of a button on a remote, releases pins or oil like in the movies? 😛

People slow down as a courtesy to cops, paramedics, mechanics, etc., who are working at the scene of an accident.

god we have a lot of people on ATOT that are pissed like there is no tomorrow.
I mean i do get angry at a lot of instances you guys mentioned... but i realize that some people are just idiots and try not to kill my mood because of them.
You guys need to sort of clam down... it'll be good for you. This is because you will realize sooner or later that some people just cant drive properly.

heh, happend to me too, at the light i slowly pull up next to the guy after he reved it all up past me and just smirk at him and do the "head nod thing" haha, he tore off the line when the light turned green.....suprisingly enough i cought him at the next light too....heh

i almost got killed bu a girl no older then 18 driving a Jag sedan talking on a cell phone. came across 3 lanes of traffic gettin on an onramp and drove me 2 tires over teh rumble strip before i could slow enough for her to go by. she didnt even notice. i was in the middle of the 3 lanes when this started. there are 4 where teh on ramp is
1. old people who do 10 under the posted limit. MAXIMUM = MINIMUM SPEED, BATTLEAXES! i'd honk you but you'd prolly have a heart attack.
2. people who see your car coming at a great speed, yet still make their turn and then drive at an annoyingly slow speed. slows all the traffic down.
3. speed bullies--those who think that tailgating you in a traffic jam will miraculously cause the jam to disappear.
4. people who are oblivious to others driving around them, i.e. not staying in their lanes, slowing down for no reason, looking at all the scenery...
5. people who do not get in their exit lane until the last possible moment.
6. people who think the yield sign means merge.

I've done that before. I was driving up my block and I pulled to the side to let an oncoming car pass. This dickhead in a mini-vancame speeding up and cut the both of us off. I followed him home, got out of the car before he did and yelled "Are you more important that everyone else that you can't slow down or stop?" He looked at me, turned a pale white and ran into the house. I drove away, I don't care.
I've got lots of driving stories. I should outfit my car with those lipstick cams and tape all the stuff I get into and see...
I really hate it when I'm in a line of traffic waiting to make a left turn and the people in front of me don't move up when the light turns green. Move UP! That way several cars can make the left turn before the light turns red again.
Also cell phones. You don't need to be "connected" 24/7. Put the phone away when you're driving.
I have to share a dumb cop story if you want to take the time to read it.
While driving on the Connecticut turnpike years ago on my way to Boston at about 2:30 AM I noticed some sort of problem on the southbound side of the highway (I was travelling north). Southbound traffic was stopped and there were state police cars with their high beams and spotlights on making it very hard to see. The glare was really bad. I had just come around a bend in the highway. Just as I approached the traffic stoppage on the opposite side while trying to make out what the problem was something on my side of the highway caught my eye. It was so hard to see with the glare I sort of sensed the trouble more than actually saw it.
Ahead of me was a tractor trailer flipped on its side blocking all three lanes of I-95, wheels and undercarriage facing me with absolutely no lights showing. I was on "the marbles" by then. Pieces of the tractor trailer that had spread from where the truck overturned to where it finally stopped. And oil on the road from the wreck to boot. I was doing 55 MPH, the speed limit at the time. I didn't break or I would have been dead meat. I took my foot off the accelerator and s-l-o-w-l-y steered right just making it around the wreck on the shoulder.
Now for the dumb cop part. The state troopers on the other side of the highway were IN FRONT OF THE WRECK WITH THEIR HIGH BEAMS AND SPOTLIGHTS SHINING IN MY EYES EFFECTIVELY HIDING THE OVRETURNED TRACTOR TRAILER IN THE GLARE!
If one of them had the common sense to turn his vehicle around and illuminate the overturned truck the hazard would have been eliminated. I know they had time because there was about a quarter mile back up behind them already. The entire incident happened in a matter of 15 to 20 seconds.
I was wide awake all the way up to Boston the rest of the trip.
I didn't need any coffee.
The adrenaline was more than enough stimulant.
Also cell phones. You don't need to be "connected" 24/7. Put the phone away when you're driving.
