Driving from Northern NJ to DC this evening

Not sure which route to take--my guess is I should avoid the I-95 corridor as I'm leaving at 5pm and that'll put me in the path of NYC rush hour and Philly rush hour. But the other route seems like its longer and a bit convoluted, and might just be slower. Any recommendations based on experience?

edit: I should clarify that I'm leaving from Basking Ridge, NJ so I'm right on I287 and pretty close to I78.
