Driving from NE Ohio to Kansas to visit family...

So next week my gf and I will be driving from Akron, OH to Topeka, KS area for a bit to visit my family. The GF hasn't really been outside OH much, and only west of the Mississippi river once when she went to Vegas.

We will be traveling through the bigger cities:
Columbus, OH
Dayton, OH
Indianapolis, IN or Louisville, KY
St Louis, MO
Columbia, MO
Kansas City, KS
Topeka, KS

Anybody have anything in these areas that we should stop and see outside of the St Louis Arch? I don't really know of anything to stop to actually see (and am fine without it, because I've done a lot of this stuff as a kid).

edit: we could change our route to go through Louisville, KY instead of Indianapolis, IN.

Katzinger's Deli in Columbus. Goddamn I miss that place. mmmmmm...........
Assuming you're both from Ohio, an Ohio State tour is always awesome

Wright Patterson AFB outside of Dayton

That sounds like the most boring drive ever. Maybe you could detour to Colorado or something.

I agree it'll be boring, and I would rather just get it over with. The gf though wants to see stuff, and so I am trying to do that. I just have no interest in any of these states. They are all useless to me 😛 (kinda like OH and KS are as well for that matter).

Interstate 70 is fairly boring from the times I've taken a similar trip. There just isn't much to do along the way. But it has been a good 10+ years since I've done it.

Indianapolis has a few attractions, but I'll let the natives from there say what to do since I never spent much time there.

The St. Louis arch is a let down. It is just an arch, not really that large even. I've seen it a dozen times but never stopped. I've heard that there is an odd elevator inside, if elevators thrill you.

Kansas City is worth visiting. World's of Fun and Oceans of Fun are good theme parks (not great, but still worth going). However they aren't even open now. The Atkin's museum is worth a trip if you like museums. The country club plaza is good if the weather is warm (spanish-style outdoor mall spanning roughly 20 square blocks with lots of restaurants). But don't go if it is freezing cold.

Yeah I remember I-70 was fairly boring also, but that was as a kid.

I agree the Arch is a let down, but it's something she wants to see so we are.

KC will be in winter (obviously), so theme parks are out. The museum I don't think she is big on (she made a comment about them already). The plaza though would be awesome. If it's warm enough we will for sure go.

Thanks

You're from Topeka, or your family just lives there now?

I am from OH, and they moved out to that area (more specifically Manhattan, KS area)

Do they work on base or at the U?

On base.

I have no input except to say that my little brother just left Ft. Riley. 🙂

Northeast Kansans unite!

As a side note.

If you ever want a really good place to eat dinner in Manhattan, check out the 4 Olives Wine Bar. Some amazing food, lots of wine, and great place.

Went there last time I was out, and my god was it great. Make sure to try Royal Tokaji dessert wine, and their Bleu Cheese Cheesecake. It was $80/per person for two of us with appatizer, two glasses of wine with dinner, 2 main courses, glass of dessert wine, 2 desserts, and a cup of expresso. Completely worth it though, and we will be going again this time.

Nice, Other than St Louis and KC I don't know much about your route. The Arch and oceans/worlds of fun are the major attractions there. Unlike some here I really like the arch, it has some sweet engineering and is pretty unique. I'd suggest checking it out!

Louisville isn't worth that much of a detour. If you still do end up there take a tour of the Louisville Slugger factory. Also make sure you eat at Mark's Feed Store (great BBQ). If you like tanks there's a decent museum at Ft. Knox. Also FYI do NOT stop to take a pic of Ft. Knox, you will get in major trouble.

USAF Museum in Dayton is awesome but your gf would probably be bored.

If you somehow end up taking I-75 from Dayton to Cincinnati look out for Touchdown Jesus on the east side of the road a little north of Cincinnati.

IMHO the St. Louis Arch is worth a stop. The elevators are fun.

Overall the route is pretty boring. I-70 just doesn't have much on it until you get to Denver and west.

Thanks for the input about Lousiville. That was what I gathered from the three times I drove through it.

If we are on I-75 I'll keep an eye out for that 😉

That is what I believed as well. I was hoping for something though that maybe I hadn't seen.

The gf mentioned driving home through Chicago..... Not like that's out of the way or anything....

You could always go to the KC Power and Light district.

What's there (besides power and lights I assume 😛)?

20some bars and restaurants. It's a fun place but this time of year it's subdued as the open air courtyard is empty.
