Looking at stopping at Sleeping Bear Dunes and Mackinack.

Where else would you go? Holland, Saugatuk? Maybe see some waterfalls, hike, relax in the sand...

Anybody been that way, or live around there? We have Monday - Friday.

I live in Traverse City, MI

Definitely go to Empire and check out the Sleeping Bear Dunes. I believe there is a nation park or whatever that you can drive through that takes you to the largest part of the dune. I'm not sure on details but I've been a few times. If you're in that area for a while there is also a sunset cruise out of Leelanau that you can check out.

Mackinac Island is ok, I'm not too impressed by it and the horse crap all over the streets isn't very attractive, but make sure you bring lots of money if you go :)

Other than that have fun driving up and be safe.

p.s. if you have any questions about the area up north pm me.

You HAVE to stop in Hell for a photograph just so you can say you went to Hell and back. :)

Soaring Eagle Casino

I went there once... was pretty nice.

Lots of cherry junk in Traverse City as I remember... cherry salsa, cherry jelly, cherry bread, cherry this, cherry that.

Don't forget to get some fudge while on Mackinac Island.

I'm assumign she is going to drive north through Wisconsin, rather than through lower Michigan, so Hell and the casinos are not going to do her any good.

I'd try and hit the smaller towns, away from the usual tourist things. sleeping bear dunes is fun if you've never seen it, though. You can catch a ferry to some of the islands north of that that area for good camping, hiking, etc. (check a map for exactly where they depart from)

I'd basically drive up the coast, stop at the places that look interesting, find an ice cream shop, and ask the proprieter what's around.

where in the UP is the final destination? there's lots of small town senic nature things in the UP. drummond island, pictured rocks, etc.

What ever you do, don't stop in flint.

If you go to mackinaw, then you have to get a burger at Clyde's.

Stop in Flint? Flint would be WAY out of the way unless you're coming FROM southeast michigan.

she said sleeping bear and holland, so that means she's planning on going through the lower penninsula.

and that casino is depressing. only place I've ever seen someone smoking through a hole in their throat. the whole place just feels like imminent death.

I used to live in Houghton, MI. It's on the "thumb" of the UP. Go see Copper Harbor, it's nice this time of year.

Oops, didn't see Holland.

If thats the case, I HIGHLY suggest you drive north through Wisconsin and through the UP, then come down to see the Dunes. The UP is a lot more scenic than the LP.

Some other sights kinda depend on how much time you're willing to waste on the way to your destination. If you're willing to go out of your way, I highly recommend Greenfield Village & Henry Ford Museum.

I HIGHLY recommend Copper Harbor if you like nature. Get there via US 41 and take time to view Brockway Mountain Drive....Amazing views.

If the OP is comming through the LP, I would recomend avoiding 75 for as long as possible. 127 is better.

The Soo locks are pretty cool, if you haven't been there before...

Thanks guys for all your suggestions! I will look into all of them tonight. We haven't decided which way we are going, although we are leaning towards driving through Wisconsin and coming home through Michigan. Any more suggestions are welcome! We're not into gambling or drinking too much, so a bike/hike nature with some horse carriages and shops would be great!

Thanks again :)

About those pasties...I was talking to a coworker from the UP, and he started talking about these pasties, for a split second I thought he was talking about something COMPLETELY different

fvck now I'm hungry.

Speaking of, does anyone know any reputable, FRESH, shops out of the UP that ship pasties? I am in CA and am really craving them.

You're headed to the right place. I've lived in the UP all my life. There's tons of trails and outdoor crap to do everywhere. So when you plan out a route, give me a PM or something!

chuckywang, did you goto Tech?? That's where I'm at right now... which reminds me, Circuit Analysis exam in a few hours.. should study :(

Try here.

I've eaten Dobber's Pasties since I was a little kid. They make good ones. Looks like the s/h is $15 though, so I don't know if it's worth it to get them shipped unless you get a few people to pitch down on a assload of them.

Actually they are only $3. Probably cheap for a meal considering you city folks pay $6+ for fast food meals. Good size and quite filling too.

Yeah the Copper Harbor area is great at this time of the year (although the fall would be pretty good scenery as weel). My roommates and I went there about a week ago up the Mountain Drive. They are some GREAT views. Bring a camera... (but don't leave it, I found me a G500 on the beach :D)

Plus if you head up that far north you can go through Gay, MI. Apparently the Gay Bar is cool. lol
